Rina Sawayama Accessories
When British-Japanese singer Rina Sawayama was first noticed when she released her debut album SAWAYAMA It sounded like an Internet browser with too many tabs open -- maybe a classic Christina Aguilera tune and a track from black metal and the RuPaul's Drag Race episode all at one time. The kaleidoscopically eclectic record's mashup of genres resonated with the day's anxieties with its post-ironic sound and big emotions yelling to break lives everywhere.


Hold the Girl is her second album, which came out on the 5th of July. She continues to push the limits but in a controlled way. It still has saccharine pop music and riffs of 2000s rock but it is more cohesive.


"Minor Feelings" is a finger-picked Acoustic track with a country tones, begins the album. rinasawayamamerch sings about the need to re-create her former selves. She also takes on deeper themes that are more personal that include the gradual loss of a relationship ("Bad Friend") and the pain of being separated from her home country ("Tokyo Love Hotel") And though these subjects might seem a bit heavy for uplifting pop songs, she presents them in a way that makes them hard to overlook.


The lyrics of Sawayama make her a unique artist in the world of pop. She's more than a person singing about her feelings she's a woman who is of colour, bringing them into the forefront, and naming events that our society or the music industry might prefer to keep hidden. This isn't just about pain, but it's also a call to action and she does this with a conviction and strength which are not often seen in pop.


She is a chameleon-like persona, and it is evident in her musical versatility as well as the ability she has to compose strong lyrics. Her red carpet appearance takes this chameleon to another level. On her promotional tour to promote the Keanu Reeves film John Wick Chapter 4, Sawayama's bold fashion selections have been awe-inspiring. She walked into the LA premier wearing a Luis De Javier Fall 2023 dress constructed of horizontal leather straps that are crisscrossed to form an off-shoulder neckline. It was adorned with the bodice striped, and a fringed, long train.



It's a style that could seem a little too sexually sensual for a red carpet however the frock's sculpted form and crystal-adorned embellishments fit with the ethereal persona of Sawayama. As with her musical endeavors, Sawayama's fashion statements will be a constant challenge to the standards of a female pop star.
