Neighborhood, founded in 1994 by Shinsuke Takizawa, is the brand that changed streetwear. Using technical apparel with military inspiration, Neighborhood clothing for men merges Americana, motorcycle subcultures and Harajuku fashion to create expertly crafted technical clothing.

Founded in 1994, NEIGHBORHOOD melded military and biker culture with technical apparel and luxury construction to create a streetwear label that changed the game. Among The Neighborhood Fisherman Hat ’s most notable products is its collaboration with Harley-Davidson, which has spawned an extensive collection of graphic t-shirts and hoodies. It also reimagines the traditional Hawaiian shirt with a twist, invoking the psychedelic hysteria of Apocalypse Now. From there, NEIGHBORHOOD and Shinsuke Takizawa have taken the pillars of Americana and refashioned them into a series of fashion forward styles that are equally at home in Japan as they are here in the States.

The neighborhood store is a concept that has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, as it focuses on providing goods that are specifically tailored to a community. These stores offer local residents a place to find items that they may not have access to at larger chain retailers, such as groceries and clothing.

Co-founders Matt Alexander and Mark Masinter took that idea to Forerunner Ventures in 2017, garnering $250,000 in pre-seed capital. They then raised an additional $5.7 million in seed financing with Forerunner, Maveron, Global Founders Capital and NextGen Venture Partners participating.

The company aims to create large spaces where more than a dozen direct-to-consumer brands can sell merchandise on a rotating basis. The model combines a traditional store experience with the excitement of a pop-up shop and the ease and efficiency of technology.

As a band, The Neighbourhood are known for their evocative mix of dark, moody rock with hints of R&B and hip hop. Frontman Jesse Rutherford’s vocals are laid back, backed by guitars and drums with effects-laden licks from guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels.


They’ve evolved their music without bending to trends or following the mainstream, and have built an extensive fan base that keeps them at the top of their game. Their latest album, Chip Chrome & the Mono-Tones (Columbia Records), is a heavy conceptual effort.

They also have a monochromatic aesthetic for their music, EP covers, promo pictures, and visuals. It’s a consistent theme throughout their first two albums, as well as their mistape #000000 & #FFFFFF (hexadecimal color coding for black and white). They even dressed in black and white to promote Hard To Imagine The Neighbourhood Ever Changing.
