The first semester of the Msc. Games Technology in Game Programming we were given the final assignment to develop a game using the Simple Render Engine (SRE). Our group decided to create a basic Minecraft-clone, with the main interesting of creating a correct Voxel data structure, as well as chunk manangement.
The result is a simple game with the same gameplay as Minecraft The game allows you to mine blocks and place them. We added some additional features like flying and added some details for particle systems with textures but the big thing is that we achived an unbeatable 60FPS game with 262,144 voxels of data.
The biggest challenges included optimisation, mesh generation and data structure. However, most of our lecturing was focused on 2D. Bonfire SRE is a target towards 2D therefore making the 3D game has added complexity. The majority of the engine supports Box2D for Physics. In our case, we used Bullet Physics which also added a layer of complexity because there was no one of us having any experience with the tool and having no lecture that was based on the library.
