When I first met the developers working on Deepworld, an 2D Sandbox-style building game that is similar to Minecraft at GDC in March, I told them that the project would be bigger than they anticipated. Although they have extensive experience in the creation of servers and software running a massive game like Deepworld requires significant investment. They appear to have come to an agreement. Kickstarter was designed to raise funds in the early stages of development and servers.
The group is offering a wide range of prizes to its supporters, including your own servers and worlds as well as art books and other items. You can also choose buying your own items, names, and even images for the game. The goal is to raise US$20,000 all in all, and as of this writing, the guys have raised around $4,000. They intend to make the project a full-time occupation, and this money will allow them to do this.
I hope they have a great time. Minecraft Skins Deepworld looks nice, and as I said when I first saw it I think the Mac (and iOS) would benefit from a game like this.
