Gaia, yang marah karena anak-anaknya (Titan) dikurung di Tartaros, menyuruh para Raksasa untuk bangkit melawan para dewa Olimpus dan mengakhiri pemerintahan mereka. Para Raksasa, dipimpin oleh Alkioneus dan Porfiion, berperang melawan para dewa dalam suatu perang yang disebut Gigantomakhia. Para Raksasa menyerang para dewa dengan melemparkan batu-batu besar. Beberapa Raksasa memiliki kaki berupa ular.
Dalam menghadapi para Raksasa, para dewa meminta bantuan Herakles setelah mendengar ramalan yang mengatakan bahwa para Raksasa hanya bisa dikalahkan dengan bantuan sang pahlawan.
Herakles bertarung dengan Alkioneus sang pemimpin Raksasa. Herakles terus menyerang Alkioneus tetapi Alkioneus tetap tak mati. Ternyata Alkioneus adalah Raksasa yang abadi selama dia berada di tempat kelahirannya, Flegra. Maka Herakles membawanya ke luar dari tempat tinggalnya dan membunuhnya.
