What is the process by which a Costume designer made Elvis' ELVIS costume
Dress to impress in this luxurious Elvis Costume. This outfit includes an open-back jumpsuit that has gold details on the chest and collar. Catherine Martin, a designer of the costumes used in the film ELVIS was required to alter the original outfits to fit Austin Butler, the lead actor. She also had to modify the costumes to fit a particular section of the storyline. In order to accomplish this it was necessary to alter the original designs in order to better suit her vision for the character Elvis as he evolved through different phases of his life.





She explains to The Curb that the challenge was to capture the King's personality in his current age instead of attempting to write a chronological biography. In the end, she says that they came up with a visual vocabulary of iconic appearances to tell the King's story. She explains that Baz Luhrmann was looking to bring out the essence of Elvis and his positive and negative traits. To that end her and her crew worked hard to make the costumes reflect that arc.





In a nod to the spotting culture of train enthusiasts and train enthusiasts, she sought out outfits that would to evoke the specific aspect of Elvis his character in the film. One of the most iconic jumpsuits as well as the blue wheat suit worn in the film's Elvis' International Hotel showroom "You're fired" routine was inspired by the 1975 navy blue two piece suit that Elvis was seen wearing in 1975 and 1976.





That same approach was applied to other costumes as well. Another notable example is the elegant purple suit Butler wears when he lampoons Colonel Tom Parker (played by Tom Hanks). The suit is a reference to the royal blue suit with gold-lined cape Elvis donned during his appearance at Madison Square Garden, June 1972.





There were Elvis Related Products staggering 9,000 extras outfits that needed to be laid out for the concert's large stage scenes -- but it was just about 90 costumes designed for Elvis himself. Like the rest of the costumes, each one was created to make it easier for the wearer to move. For instance, Martin discovered while reviewing archives of photographs that Elvis only performed the button at the bottom of his suit, which allowed her to create a rockabilly-inspired suit that would allow Butler to perform the famous shoulder rolls. Overall, ELVIS was a huge hit for the Bazmark design team. It's all because of the amazing performance of Butler as the King.
