Elvis Costume: A Closer View
It's not simple to adapt a story from life onto the screen. It's necessary to examine the entire life of a person and then distill it into a manageable amount time. It's not a secret that Catherine Martin, whose work on Baz Luhrmann's ELVIS was an economic and critical success was well aware that every decision would be closely scrutinized. Martin was required to design costumes that were a reflection of Presley's rock persona, while also reflecting the waning of his life. The result was a variety of clothes that were immediately recognized.






Elvis was seen in this elegant jumpsuit for the first time in the August/September 1972 Las Vegas engagement. The singer wore the suit several times in 1974, as well as in September and October of 1974 during his Tahoe engagement. It is among few suits that have an identifier to it in the Elvis catalog. EPE/Graceland is the owner of the cape and suit today.





Belew designed the first version in 1973. It was his final design for Elvis prior to his retirement from all his stage costumes. The suit was also referred to as the "Kitchen Sink Suit" due to the fact that it was constructed from pieces left over from earlier suits. The suit was fitted with two buckles for the belt, and was adorned with three different caps.





Elvis his signature outfit is the peacock-inspired style which was prominently displayed in the making of this unique. The extravagant suit also demonstrates the extent to which Elvis would go in his performances on stage.





The slacks and jackets that were mismatched and his gold-colored Nudie suits, were the very first outfits to show off his distinctive style. The slacks and jacket that were mismatched were worn by him when he was enjoying the freedom of casual rockabilly attire, prior to the time that extravagant clothing was a staple of his wardrobe.





The costume was worn by actor who played the film 'You're Fired' in the showroom of the "International Hotel". The suit was made with over 9,000 additional outfits, including socks, shoes and underwear, as well as pants. Elvis Costume is on display in the Graceland special exhibit. A private collector owns one of the original capes that was worn with this outfit and all the other suits of the time. Ed Parker now owns the second cape. The third cape was auctioned off at EPE/Graceland. The collector also purchased the original belt worn in this suit.
