Medication for Dementia Patients
There is no cure for dementia, but there are medicines that can help ease some symptoms. These include acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (often shortened to 'cholinesterase inhibitors') such as donepezil, rivastigmine and galantamine.

Cholinesterase Inhibitors
The most common medications for people with Alzheimer's disease are acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors. These drugs work by boosting levels of a chemical messenger in the brain that is important for memory and thought processes. These medications are used to treat the symptoms of mild, moderate or severe Alzheimer's disease and may also be prescribed for other types of dementia, including vascular dementia, Parkinson's disease dementia and Lewy body dementia.

These drugs may be prescribed to control behaviour in some people with dementia who have disruptive behaviour such as restlessness, aggression and a tendency to believe or see things that aren't there. However, these drugs can be harmful and should only be used short term and with the support of a carer. They can also have side-effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, unsteadiness and shaking or tremors and they can increase the risk of falls and sudden death.
Memantine
This is a newer antidementia drug that works in a different way to cholinesterase inhibitors. It has been shown to improve apathy, mood and confidence in those with dementia, especially for those with Lewy bodies. It is used for a short period of time to improve sleep and to help with night-time agitation in some people with dementia.
