The 1970s saw Lacy became a master of experimental improvisation, and spread his ideas on a variety of recordings. When he reduced his sextet size to one of four musicians, Catherine Pfeifer playing accordion and John Betsch on the drums and Jean-Jacques Avenel on bass. This resulted in recordings like Stamps and The Way in February 1978 which featured longer performances of Duckles and Wickets.


Lacy's agility was shown through three solo saxophone works, Torments (June 1975), Axieme vol 1 & 2 (September 1975) & Stabs (November 1975). He also delved into more modest styles, like Distant Voices (june 1975) on a trio album (Yuji Takahashi playing piano, celesta and vibraphone, Takehisa Kosugi playing violin flute, vocals and flute). The Whammies bring back the sounds of Lacy's earlier.
