Tips For Choosing a College THAT MAY HELP YOU Land a Job
Helen Kim is applying to college this season, but she's not sure where you can go, or what to major in. And given the existing economy, with unemployment among college grads at an all time high, she's especially concerned about job prospects after graduation. At this time, she actually is considering two routes: either to major in Communication Studies at a university, or to major in fashion design at a fashion school. website loves both subjects, but she also wants to make sure that her education prepares her to enter the workforce. If, like Helen, you're choosing a college, here are a few things to consider if getting a job is really a priority for you as well.

Theory vs. Practical Skills. In most colleges, the curriculum is developed to introduce students to theoretical concepts, instead of hands-on, practical skills. For example, even in a major like Business Administration, your coursework would be heavy on theory, and you are not likely to learn actual skills until you enter the workforce. However, once you learn what you want to do after graduation, select a college that teaches practical skills in your selected field. The reason why Helen finds fashion school such an attractive option is she knows her classes will prepare her to hit the ground running on her first job.

Work Experience of the Faculty. Look for a college in which the faculty is employed in the profession you need to get into. They'll be through to current trends and have industry connections which will help you in your job search.

Career Placement & Alumni Contacts. How active may be the career center in planning your career? Seek out colleges which have strong ties to industries in which you're interested. They will offer more access to internships and full-time jobs. A big network of working alumni may also increase your likelihood of landing a job.

Fast Track to a qualification. If you already know what you want to accomplish, four years of college might seem as an eternity. Consider colleges that offer two-year programs, so you'll begin working in half the time.
