Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?
For decades, neighbors in Houston's Fifth Ward have argued the company hasn't done enough to clean up creosote-laden creosote plume that was at its contaminated rail yard. Now, the most recent tests show that the contamination could still be affecting those who live near.
Researchers believe that it could be due to the large number of cancers in the area. Two years into a health inspection by the state and they found higher than expected rates of childhood lymphoblastic Leukemia as well as adult kidney and pelvis cancers in neighborhoods surrounding the Union Pacific site.
Creosote
Creosote is one of the most common chemicals employed in the treatment of wood. It is also a dangerous substance that can cause cancer in those exposed to it.
It is a dense, oily substance that is black or amber-colored and has a smokey odor and a burnt taste. It is a distillation of coal product that has been used for over 150 years as a wood preserver.
It is utilized in the United States to treat railroad tiesand other types of woods, like fence posts and utility poles, as well as marine pilings. It is also used to protect log homes and other structures from insects and rot infestation.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declares that creosote can be an extremely hazardous chemical. Exposure to creosote for short periods can result in irritation to the eyes and skin chemical burns stomach pains, burning in the throat or mouth as well as liver or kidney problems, and even permanent damage.
Long-term exposure may cause skin and scrotum tumors. This is a major concern for workers who are in direct contact with it during wood treatment or in other manufacturing processes.
According to the EPA, it is a likely human cancer-causing agent. It has been linked with many types of cancer, including esophageal as well lung cancer.
Residents of Houston's Fifth Ward neighborhood have been exposed to creosote over the years due to the former rail yard that was located near their homes. They claim that the chemical has caused soil and homes to be contaminated and continues to spread underground.
The city of Houston and Harris County have joined the initiative to sue Union Pacific in federal court. They demand that the company test frequently for contamination and take steps to prevent the spread of the disease.
In October of 2017, a group of Fifth Ward neighbors sued Union Pacific. They claim that creosote had contaminated their soil and caused serious health issues from the former rail yard.
They are seeking compensation from the railroad to cover the cost of cleanup and other related costs. They also claim to be affected by environmental racism and discrimination, and other types of pollution that have adversely affected their families and friends.
Dioxin
Dioxins are chemical compounds that aren't able to break down in the environment quickly and can remain in the air, water soil or sediment for long periods. They are found in many places such as natural disasters, industrial accidents, cigarette smoke and incineration as well as hazardous waste.
The effects of dioxin on health are not clear at low levels, but there is evidence that suggests they may cause cancer as well as other serious illnesses. People exposed to higher levels are believed to be at greater risk of heart disease, organ cancers immune system problems, and endocrine imbalances like hormonal imbalances. They can also cause reproductive issues, a weak immune system, menstrual problems and diabetes and hair loss, weight loss and facial cysts, known as chloracne.
According to the U.S. Union Pacific Cancer that people are exposed dioxin is through food or drinking water. They are not volatile or water-soluble so they are more easily absorbed by the body through the intake of dairy products, meat, fish, and other seafood.
It is important to remember that exposure can cause harm to your health based on a variety of factors like how much you consume, drink, and how often you breathe. It is also important to take into consideration your gender, age, diet, nutritional status and family characteristics, as well as other health factors that can influence whether you will be affected by dioxins or not.
In addition, the form of contaminant is an important factor. According to the EPA, some toxins are more dangerous than others to the health of humans. Polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, are more likely than creosote to have a negative effect on your health.
PCBs can cause damage to the eyes and kidneys, liver, and kidneys. They can also harm a person's immune system and interfere with the growth of healthy bones and teeth.
Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden neighbors have complained for years of cluster of cancer deaths caused by the Union Pacific rail yard. The yard is situated next to their homes. The city's health department announced on Friday that it had found cancer-causing chemicals in surface samples from the rail yard. The release stated that the results were "not encouraging." FOX 26's Mayor Sylvester Turner stated that he intends to sue Union Pacific over the matter and that a proposal submitted by Texas environmental regulators won't suffice.
Polychlorinated Biphenyls
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are toxic chemicals that have been employed in industrial and consumer products for more than 60 years. They were banned in 1979 following they were found to cause cancer, weaken the immune system and inhibit learning.
Once released into the environment, PCBs contaminate air, water, and soil throughout the world. They are powerful binders of organic matter, and are transported easily and accumulated in the environment.
PCBs are a major concern for protecting the environment and public health. They are considered a probable human carcinogen by EPA, and have been proven to cause cancer in laboratory animals.
In addition, some studies have found a link between PCBs to birth defects in children. This is particularly true for children exposed to PCBs in the womb.
PCBs are most commonly consumed through food items. Because they are the highest in PCBs fish is the most significant source of exposure. However, PCBs can also found in dairy products, beef and other agricultural products.
Showering and drinking PCB-contaminated water is another way to be exposed. This can be caused by spills or leaks that may be caused by electrical or other equipment.
People are also exposed to PCBs through breathing in air or skin contact. These chemicals can cause a condition called chloracne, which is a mild, small skin lesions that can last from weeks to years.
However the effects of PCBs on human health are not yet completely comprehended. Researchers have suggested that they could cause liver and biliary cancers in humans. However, more research is needed to determine how this impacts us.
EPA is also studying whether these chemicals may cause birth defects in newborns, including lower birth weight. The low birth weight of newborns has been linked to insulin resistance, or Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease later in life. In two studies, children born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower body weight at birth, and/or later in childhood.
Lead
Lead is a toxic metal and is present in a variety of products, including pipes, paints and food containers. It can be absorbed by the body through two main routes: oral and respiratory.
It is a strong chemical that can oxidize and react with other substances in your environment. It can build up in the body, which could cause serious health issues, such as cancer and other ailments.
In Houston residents living close to a creosote-based treatment facility owned by the Union Pacific Railroad have a high risk of developing cancer. The city has requested the assistance of the federal government in the cleanup of the railroad's contamination site.
The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of polluting its rail yard in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with chemicals that are carcinogenic to humans, such as creosote. Residents claim that the company has been trying to remove the contamination but the plan presented to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was not enough.
One of the most significant problems that resulted from the contamination was the groundwater plume that runs beneath the homes in the area. A recent study conducted by the health department shows that the concentration of creosote found in soil samples near the rail yard is higher than the recommended level for drinking water.
Another concern is the slow release of creosote in the air. It is causing residents to breathe dangerous levels of vapors, which could be fatal for both children as well as adults.
It is possible that the vapors could cause cancer in those who breathe them. To learn more about the impact of the vapors on the lives of residents the neighborhood, a door-to-door survey being conducted in the neighborhood.
This is a major issue for the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities. This is a tragic situation that must be dealt with immediately.
A Department of State Health Services study found that leukemia rates were five times higher among children living in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhoods than was expected. The study also found that adult cancers were more common in the neighborhoods than elsewhere in Texas.
