How To Tell If You're In The Right Place To Go After Railroad Workers
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

Houston's Fifth Ward neighbors have complained for years that the company hasn't done enough to clean the underground plume that was contaminated with rail yard. The latest tests suggest that the contamination could still be affecting people who live near.

Researchers believe it's due to the high incidence of cancers found in the region. Two years into a state health investigation they discovered higher than expected rates of childhood leukemia and adult renal and kidney pelvis cancers within the communities around the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote is a chemical commonly used to treat wood. It is also a dangerous substance that can cause cancer in those exposed to it.

It is a thick oily substance, amber to black in color. It has a smokey smell and a burnt taste. It is a coal tar distillation product and has been used for more than 150 years as a wood preservative.

It is used in the United States to treat railroad ties, as well as other types of woods like fence posts and utility poles, and marine pilings. It can also be used to protect log houses and other structures from rot and insect infestation.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that creosote can be a hazardous chemical. In short-term exposure, it can cause eye and skin irritation chemical burns stomach pain burning of the throat or mouth, and kidney or liver problems.

Long-term exposure could lead to skin and scrotum tumors. Workers who come into direct contact with it during wood treatment and other manufacturing processes are susceptible to cancer.

It is considered a probable human carcinogen, as per the EPA. It has been linked with various cancers that include esophageal aswell as lung cancer.

Residents of Houston's Fifth Ward neighborhood have been exposed to creosote for decades, thanks to the former rail yard that was located near their homes. They claim that the chemical has affected their homes, soil, and continues to spread underground.

Harris County and Houston have joined forces to fight Union Pacific in federal court. They are demanding that the company test for contamination on a regular basis and implement preventative measures to prevent it from spreading.

In October 2017 a group of Fifth Ward neighbors filed a lawsuit against Union Pacific. They claim that creosote has contaminated their soil and caused serious health problems from the former rail yard.

They are seeking compensation for their ailments and suffering and compensation from the railroad for the cost of cleaning and other costs. They claim to have been harmed by racism in the environment and discrimination, as well as other kinds of pollution that have affected their families and themselves.

Dioxin

Dioxins are substances which do not break down quickly in the environment, and they can stay in the air, water, or in sediment for a long period of time. They are found in many places such as natural disasters, industrial accidents, cigarettes and incineration, as well as hazardous waste.

Although the effects of dioxin on health at low levels are not known yet, there is evidence suggesting that they can trigger serious illnesses like cancer. Dioxin levels that are higher have been linked with an increased risk for heart disease, organ cancers as well as immune-related issues and endocrine issues like hormonal imbalances. They can also lead to problems with hormones, immune suppression womenstrual issues, diabetes and weight loss.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the most prevalent way people are exposed is through water and food. They aren't volatile nor water-soluble, therefore they are more easily taken in by the body through the intake of dairy products, meat fish, and other seafood.

But it is important to remember that the level of exposure that can have adverse effects on your health is contingent upon various factors, including the amount you eat or drink, how often you drink or eat and how much air you breathe. It is also important to consider your gender and age, nutritional status, and family characteristics to determine if you'll be exposed to dioxins.

In addition, the form of contaminant is also an important aspect. According to the EPA, some toxins are more dangerous than others to the health of humans. For instance, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are more likely to have a detrimental effect on your health than creosote.

For example, PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys, and liver. They can also affect the immune system of a person, and interfere with the growth of healthy teeth and bones.

Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden neighbors have complained for a long time about cluster of cancers that have been connected to the Union Pacific rail yard. The yard is right close to their homes. The announcement released on Friday by Houston's health department said that it had identified cancer-causing chemicals in surfaces near the rail yard. The release said that the findings were "not encouraging." Mayor Sylvester Turner told FOX 26 that he plans to take legal action against Union Pacific over the matter, and said a plan presented to Texas environmental regulators wouldn't be adequate given the findings.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls

PCBs, also known as polychlorinated Biphenyls, are noxious chemicals that have been in use for more than 60 years in both consumer and industrial products. After they were proven to cause cancer and weaken the immune system These chemicals were banned in 1979.

Once released into the natural environment, PCBs contaminate air, water, and soil in many areas of the world. Railroad Cancer are strong binders for organic matter and can be transported easily and accumulated in the environment.

PCBs are a significant concern for protecting the environment and public health. The EPA considers them a probable human carcinogen and has proved that they can cause cancer in laboratory animals.

Furthermore certain studies have linked PCBs to birth defects in children. This is particularly relevant for children who have been exposed to these chemicals during pregnancy.

The most common route for exposure to PCBs is through food items. Because they are the highest in PCBs, fish is the main source of exposure. But, PCBs can also be found in beef and dairy and other agricultural products.

Another way to be exposed PCBs is through drinking and showering with water that is polluted with PCBs. This could be caused by leaks or spills that occur in electrical equipment and other.

People are also exposed to PCBs by breathing in air or by skin contact. These chemicals can cause a condition called Chloracne. This is a tiny pale, yellow-colored lesions that last for weeks or even years.

The effects of PCBs on the health of humans aren't fully understood. Some researchers have suggested they may cause liver and biliary tract cancer in humans, but more studies are needed to determine how this impacts us.

EPA has also been examining whether these chemicals can cause birth defects in newborns, like less weight at birth. The low birth weight of newborns has been associated with Type II diabetes, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease later in life. Two studies found that children born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood were born with lower birth weights and/or later in life.

Lead

Lead is a poisonous metal that is found in many products, such as pipes, paints and food containers. The body can absorb it via two routes: oral and respiratory.

It is a powerful chemical that can oxidize and react with other chemicals present in your environment. Railroad Cancer Lawsuit can accumulate within the body and can lead to serious health issues like cancer and other diseases.

Houston residents who live near the Union Pacific Railroad's legacy creosote plant have a high rate of cancer. The city has requested the federal government to instruct the railroad to clean its toxic site.

The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of contamination of its rail yard in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with carcinogenic chemicals to humans, such as creosote. Residents have claimed that the company has been working to get rid of the pollution, but the plan presented to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was not sufficient.

One of the most important problems that arose due to the contamination is the groundwater plume beneath homes in the area. A recent study conducted by the department of health shows that the concentration of creosote in soil samples from the rail yard is greater than the recommended level for drinking water.

Another major concern is that the creosote is slowly escaping into the air. As it is, it causes residents to breathe in dangerous levels of vapors that can be toxic for both children and adults.

It is also possible that the gases are causing cancers in the people who breathe the vapors in. A door-to door health survey is being conducted in the neighborhood to discover more about the effects of the vapors on the residents' lives.

Railroad Cancer Lawsuit is a major problem for the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities. This is a very tragic situation that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

A recent study by the Department of State Health Services discovered that children who lived in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden neighborhoods contracted a form of leukemia at five times higher rate than the average. The study also revealed that adult cancers were more prevalent in these areas than elsewhere in Texas.
