Sonic's team chaotix members are his other companions, and they help him protect planet Mobius. In the long-running US Archie Comic, it is shown that Mobius used to be Earth, before Xorda aliens detonated a Gene Bomb and wiped out most of humanity. The remaining creatures were then transformed into Mobius. Sonic shares several friendships with other members of his group, such as Vector the Crocodile (nicknamed "Vet").

Emerl is another cartoon character that is based on Sonic. He is a mutated Echidna, who is the leader and a member of Freedom Fighters. Sonic the Hedgehog, a Saturday morning cartoon, often featured the two characters in romantic situations. Sally was portrayed as Sonic's loving girlfriend and Emerl, as his father figure.

Sonic has been featured in a number of television shows, including the classic cartoons. In the anime Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi the main character pretends that she is a character in a Sonic game. She breaks the sound barrier by running through a forest at high speeds. She also jumps onto a crab and runs on a checkered circle. Sega also sponsored the Japanese football team JEF United Ichihara Chiba from 1993 to 1997 using Sonic as the mascot. Sonic became popular outside of videogames thanks to this promotion. Other sports teams adopted him as their mascots.
