Attorney facing drug charges
CURRITUCK ? A criminal defense attorney with an office in Currituck County is facing drug possession charges after being arrested in the county late last week.
Phillip Hayes, 56, of the 300 block of Colington Drive, Kill Devil Hills, is charged with one count of felony possession of cocaine and one count of misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, Currituck Chief Deputy Matt Beickert said on Tuesday.
Hayes was arrested late Friday evening in the 900 block of Caratoke Highway, sheriff?s arrest records show. He was later released after posting $1,500 secured bond.
In a statement Tuesday, Beickert said deputies stopped Hayes? vehicle in the idea Harbor area of Currituck following an investigation by both sheriff?s office and the Dare County Narcotics Task Force. Deputies found in Hayes? possession about three grams of cocaine in a plastic bag, Beickert said.
Currituck court officials said Hayes made an initial appearance on Monday in District Court before Judge Charles Vincent of Pitt County. Hayes was represented by Allen Grimsley, a lawyer from Dare County who waived Hayes? to a probable cause hearing.
Perquimans Criminal Lawyer said Hayes didn?t make any statements to the court on Monday.
Neither Hayes nor Grimsley could immediately be reached for comment on Tuesday.
Hayes? Facebook page shows him having both a criminal and civil law practice in the Harbinger section of Lower Currituck.
