Best Over-Ear Headphones
Over-ear headphones, unlike earbuds can completely surround the ears. They also permit bigger drivers that provide deeper bass and a bigger soundstage. Many also include active noise cancellation and Bluetooth technology.
The Master & Dynamic MW65 has been updated with superior audio and multiple ANC mode and an impressive battery life.
1. Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless
Sony has made improvements to an already great pair of headphones with the WH-1000XM4 Wireless. They're less heavy, feel better constructed, and have more balanced sound profiles (though still bass heavy), and come with an app that lets you do some audio adjustments. Their active noise cancelling works better than ever before, eliminating any background noise. Additionally, they have a longer continuous battery life than a lot of competitors.
These headphones are Bluetooth 5.0 compatible and Sony LDAC is also compatible with. The latter is able to transfer high-resolution audio, however you'll need compatible devices and streaming services. Additionally, the WH-1000XM4s can connect to two Bluetooth devices at once and automatically switch between them when required. You can enable this feature via the Sony Headphones Connect app and it is extremely effective.
The touch panels are more sensitive than the XM3. They respond faster to the tap of the panel, and this makes them easier to control during calls or to listen to music. Sony has also added a feature that can make voices sound more clear and precise during calls. This is a noticeable and pleasant addition.
Although best wireless over ear headphones -1000XM4s may not be perfect, they are some of the top wireless headphones we've ever tried. They are comfortable and well-made. They also have an energy-efficient battery that can last for more than 30 continuous hours. They can also be used in a passive manner with a TRS cable, which is ideal if you're traveling or need to conserve power.
The WH1000XM4s provide a superior alternative to the Bowers & Wilkins Wireless Over-Ears Px7 S2. The Sonys are more comfortable and their ANC can block out more ambient noise. They also have an app that lets you alter their audio performance and EQ settings are more flexible than the B&W's. But the B&Ws have a better-built design, and they can connect with two Bluetooth devices at once. They also support aptXHD and have an AI-driven engine which tries to up-scale compressed music to high resolution. This is called DSEE Extreme, and it enhances the clarity of music when listening to lossless audio files.
2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless
The $329 Bose QuietComfort45 Noise-Canceling headset is the most current version of a headset which has become a favorite among commuters and travelers all over the world. The new model does not reinvent the wheel. It uses the same formula that was the basis of its predecessor's success, while adding the USB-C port and improved noise cancellation.
These over-ear Bose headsets come with a premium feel and appearance, similar to the QC 35 II headphones that were before them. The headband is constructed of plastic, and is a solid feel, with hinges made of metal at pivot points and the ratcheting mechanism that is familiar when you extend or retract the earcups. The cups feature soft, cushioned pads that fit comfortably over the ears and don't apply pressure to your head. When folded, they weigh 238 grams. They can be paired with a sweater or coat as they work even when they are not on the head.
Despite their reputation as comfortable headphones, the QC45s do not provide the best sound quality at this price point. The frequencies are relatively flat and lack the depth that headphones with higher prices might be capable of bringing out. The upper registers are boosted which is great for most music genres but can be problematic for more delicate and intricate genres. The bass is decent, but it lacks the punch.
The ability to pause playback when you remove the headset is a feature that is missing. This is standard in this price range and something that Bose's rivals have been offering for years. Another omission was the lack of an in-app EQ. Bose has preset EQs available in the app but it would be nice if there was a manual control.
Bluetooth 5.0 is supported, with multipoint as well as more advanced codecs, such as aptX Adaptive. You can download the Bose Audio app to adjust your headset's sound and voice assistant settings.
The QC45s have four microphones built-in to pick up your voice when you are on the phone. The headsets have a good call quality, but they don't allow you to mute the voice during playback as other wireless headphones. Update: As of February 2022, a firmware update to the QC45s gave you manual EQ options in the audio app which is a welcomed improvement.
3. Focal Bathys Wireless
Focal is a French audio brand known for its high-performance headphones with long lasting comfort and a design that lets listeners know they're listening to something special. Their first foray into wireless headphones that block noise the Bathys are stunning cans that look and sound fantastic. They also have an inbuilt high-performance USB DAC which means you can use them for wireless and wired listening.
Focal claims that the Bathys can play Bluetooth music for 30 hours. We actually got a little more out of them and got over 40 hours on average out of a single charge. If you require a recharge, there's a light on the right ear cup that will change to red when the headphone has to be charged.
For headphones at this price, they offer many features. They support multiple devices at once and feature automatic pairing. (You must select your source device by hand each time you listen.) The headphones come with built-in microphones that works with voice assistants like Siri or Alexa. They also come with an easy-to-use interface that makes it simple to manage your music and make calls.
For headphones with over-ear connectivity The Bathys perform very well in our test of noise cancellation. They cut down the background sound by around 9 decibels on average. This isn't as impressive a result as the ANC in the Sony WH-1000XM4 or Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless but it's still quite effective.
In our tests of the quality of sound from headphones The Bathys were a good overall performer with a frequency response that mostly is in line with the SoundGuys headphone preference curve with only minor deviations in the mids and bass. The Bathys have a bassy sound profile that can make instruments, vocals and cymbals seem veiled.
You can wear them anywhere without worrying that others will listen to your music. Their mic has passable quality of recording via Bluetooth with only slight distortion in the mid to treble range.
4. Sennheiser Momentum 4
The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless is a new update of the company's most popular Bluetooth headsets. The previous model, the Momentum 3, was a decent, but not the most impressive entry in the class. The latest pair improves on the previous model by having a sleeker design, improved gesture controls, and a huge battery life.
Many of the improvements aren't that obvious, but they add up to create a pair of over-ears that seem like a step up from the old one. The Momentum 4s are flat and do not fold. They come with a hardshell case that protects them while on the move. The Momentum 4s are non-device-specific, similar to other Bluetooth headphones from recent years, including the ones from Bowers & Wilkins and Sony. They work with both Apple iPhones and Android phones, but they do not have the AirPods additional features such as Find My Support and head-tracked spatial audio.
The biggest difference is the massive battery that can play for up to 60 hours with noise cancellation on. This is more than what the majority of the competition can offer and enough for a long-distance trip without worrying about finding an outlet to charge it.
Engadget senior editor Billy Steele gave the headphones an 82 rating, citing their audio quality and ANC as their main strengths. The only thing he dislikes is that they lack a sense of gravitas in the mids and the treble, which means that orchestral music tends to sound flat instead of grand. The bass is well rounded, but can be too loud, which can cause to fatigue when songs have high-pitched bass lines, like the drum beats of As I Lay Dying’s Forever. The cymbals also sound sizzled rather than full and there's not a real feeling of depth in the bass.
The Momentum 4s are comfortable and shouldn't put too much pressure on your ears or neck. They can be a bit fidgety when you wear them around the home or during long listening sessions. They will move around on your head and make a lot of head movements. This could cause them to unexpectedly wake up which can be distracting when you are listening to music or calls. They will shut down automatically after 15 minutes, and can be shut off manually with the power button.
