Sutopu, derinliği en az 1.90 ile 2.00 metre arasındaki havuzlarda oynanır. Havuzun boyu 33 metre (minik takımlar ve kadınlar için 25 metre) ve eni 20 metre olmalıdır. Kalelerin yüksekliği 90 santimetre ve iki yan direğin arası ise 3 metre olmalıdır. Sutopunda her bir takımda 6 alan oyuncusu ve 1 kaleci toplamda 7 as oyuncu bulunur.Sutopu, oluşan bu 7 kişilik 2 takım arasında oynanır. Her takım yedek olarak maksimum 6 oyuncu bulundurabilir. Bir takımda yedek oyuncu bulunmayabilir. Fakat maç esnasında ilk 7 oyuncu bulunmak zorundadır. Eğer takımda 7 kişi bulunmuyorsa takım o maçı hükmen kaybeder.Takımlardan biri mavi, diğeri ise beyaz şapka (bone) takmak zorundadır. Hakemlerin daha rahat iletişim kurmaları için bu bonelerin üzerinde 1 ile 13 arasında numaralar bulunur. Bu boneler sporcuların formaları yerine geçer. Oyunda zamanlama yaş gruplarına göre değişir. Küçükler kategorisi ve daha alt kategorilerin bir devre süresi 7 dakikadır. Oyun toplam 28 dakika oynanır. Yıldızlar ve üst yaş grupları için bir devrelik süre 8 dakikadır. Bu yaş grubunda ise oynanan toplam süre 32 dakikadır. Her yaş grubunda oyun dört devreden ve iki yarıdan oluşur. Tüm oyun içinde bir takımın 2 mola hakkı vardır. Maç esnasında periyot araları 2 dakika, molalar ise 1 dakikadır.
