Given the positive economic benefits for the casinos and their respective state governments, urban casinos in the northeast have made considerable contributions to host states and the overall U.S. commercial casino revenues. However, it is unclear how these economic benefits translate into positive outcomes for the local host urban communities. MMORPGs and their guild-systems are characterized by shared roles (Rapp 2018) and mutual norms and policies concerning acceptable gaming behaviors. Consequently, social media users are increasingly exposed to gambling content and gambling-like activities in social media (King and Delfabbro 2016). At the same time, gambling problems are growing globally (Calado and Griffiths 2016). Online games and video games increasingly include gambling-like and monetary features, such as microtransactions (Jacques et al. 2016; H. S. Kim et al. 2017; King et al. 2015), blurring the line between gambling and gaming.
However, as a new phenomenon, little research is reported that examines problem gambling in relation to the proximity of urban casinos (Conway, 2015). Welte et al. (2017), in an earlier study, explained that individuals who live in mature gambling communities (such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City) for more than ten years gamble less than those who do not. This hypothesis has been postulated for destination casinos in mature gambling communities (Hodgins and Petry, 2016; Shaffer, 2005); however, urban casino communities have not been empirically tested using the perspectives of adaptation theory due to the newness of this phenomenon.
Casinos are built to keep visitors inside their doors for as long as possible, patronizing their own restaurants, shops and entertainment venues – at the expense of the 90,000-plus jobs area businesses support. Cheating and scamming in order to gain monetary benefits and virtual items are seen as norm-breaking and are socially sanctioned behaviors within game communities (Blackburn et al. 2014; Goodfellow 2015). However, in some game communities, such as in Habbo Hotel, scamming and cheating are regarded as normal and harmless activities despite their antisocial nature (Griffiths and Light 2008). Conversely, casinos could also contribute to the introduction of crime, creation of undesirable businesses (such as pawnshops, payday loans, and check cashing stores), and production of problem gambling (Conway, 2015; Tolchard, 2015; Tong and Chim, 2013). Therefore, despite potential positive socio-economic benefits to host economies, casinos could negatively affect host urban cities. State governments continue to realize substantive tax revenues from gambling legalization and regulation (Petry and Blanco, 2013). Still, it is unclear how revenues from casino gambling in major northeast urban cities trickle back to the local communities.
In particular, Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) are characterized by their community aspects and joint playing. In MMORPGs, gaming typically takes place in “guilds” that can be defined as long-lasting social structures where players are interdependent on each other’s contribution (Zhong 2011). Guild playing is also important in terms of a player’s game-related social identity (Guegan et al. 2015). In this review, we examine these different virtual spaces and their role in gambling and monetary gaming behaviors in more depth.

Similarities and Differences Between Online Gambling and Gaming Communities
Humans have a basic need for social belonging and relatedness (Baumeister and Leary 1995; Deci and Ryan 2000), which is one of the reasons behind the success of online communities and social media (Keipi and Oksanen 2014; McKenna and Bargh 1999; Reich and Vorderer 2013; William et al. 2000). Following Kozinets’ (1999) fundamental definition, virtual communities (i.e., online communities) consist of groups of people sharing social interactions, social ties, and virtual spaces for interactions. Communities are characterized by shared interests, goals, and norms that unite like-minded individuals (Preece 2000; Rheingold 1993). Indeed, in a virtual environment people have a tendency toward homophily, that is, to seek for and interact with similar others (Centola and van de Rijt 2015; McPherson et al. 2001). On April 6, RNRA launched a public survey to capture candid feedback from impacted members of the community. The introduction to the survey included links to all of the materials prepared by the developers and the city, as well as to RNRA documents raising questions about, and pointing out potential negative impacts from, the proposed development.

But since College Township didn’t opt out of the Category 4 bidding before the state’s August 2019 deadline, it’s unclear whether the PGCB would be willing to deny Bally’s a gaming license simply on the grounds of public opposition. The PGCB has promised the local opposition that the state will weigh the community feedback in making its final decision as to whether to grant Bally’s an operating license for College Township. Online or Internet casino gambling was first to emerge, followed by sports betting (Nower et al., 2017). (2017) asserts that it is not known whether online gambling is a substitute for on-land gambling or just another mode of gambling without further research. Hodgins and Petry (2016) also noted that online gambling accounts for a small percentage of the overall commercial gambling revenue despite increases in that mode of gambling.
Gambling and gambling-like behaviors can be detrimental particularly when excessive, and lead to severe and long-lasting problems, such as economic difficulties (Oksanen et al. 2018). One nationally conducted study for the National Gambling Impact Study Commission reported that casinos located within 50 miles from individuals’ homes contributed to gambling-related problems (Gerstein et al., 1999, p. 10; Welte et al., 2016a, p. 2). An earlier study reported that 10 miles from individual homes indicated a likelihood of gambling-related problems (Welte et al., 2004). Tong and Chim (2013) also found that the lack of a standard definition, measurement, or tool to define casino proximity, resulted in the terms high and low casino proximity that varied across the studies analyzed in their systematic review.
Apparently cognizant of the central role community pushback will play in the bidding process, Cohen’s team has shied away from saying outright that a casino is in the works. The three outer-borough bids — at Coney Island, in the Bronx and near Citi Field in Queens — have so far met less explicit community board criticism. But the developers of those projects have moved more slowly to publicize their plans, and have still been hit by outbursts of local criticism. Similarly, close to the Philadelphia metro area, Parx, which initially opened as the Keystone Racetrack in 1974, went through several transitions before Parx officially opened in December 2010 (Conway, 2015), as a commercial casino. Harrahs Philadelphia Casino and Racetrack in Chester, approximately 14.5 miles from Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station (Google Maps, n.d.), also began as a racino in 2007, but in 2010 live table games were permitted (Conway, 2015; Parmley, 2010).
Both gambling and gaming communities are also important in gambling- and gaming-related identity constructions (Järvinen-Tassopoulos 2016; Mudry and Strong 2013; O’Leary and Carroll 2013; Pinto et al. 2015). Gambling communities are grounded on mutual norms, where it is important to conform in order to be accepted as a legitimate member of the community (Mudry and Strong 2013; O’Leary and Carroll 2013). In addition to the potential for small businesses to benefit from new customers, Switzer said the casino will bring in $10 million a year in tax revenue for the city. Additionally, Kentucky-based developer Churchill Downs Inc. will establish a board of directors to dictate another tax, amounting to up to $5 million, for community projects, he said.

Before introducing northeast metro area casinos, casino participation and gambling were mainly conducted at the Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods casinos in Connecticut, and the Atlantic City casinos in New Jersey. Legalization continued to pave the way for more casinos, including the new wave of urban casinos, which sometimes joined existing racetracks. A plausible explanation for the lack or scarcity of these communities is that there is a general lack of consensus on the phenomenon and definition of problematic gaming and whether it can be qualified as an addiction (Griffiths et al. 2015). Recently, “gaming disorder” has been included in the latest International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), and in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V), it is recognized as a condition that requires more research before including it into mental disorders.
Sugarhouse Casino, now called Rivers Casino Philadelphia, is an urban standalone commercial casino without a racetrack in the Philadelphia metro area.
