Mesothelioma Lawyer Files Talc Lawsuit Against Johnson & Johnson
A man aged 24 with pericardial msothelioma claims that Johnson & Johnson baby powder is the cause of his cancer. The Oakland mesothelioma case is the first to proceed since J&J has dissolved its talc business and filed for bankruptcy.
In the beginning of this year, large settlements were made in talc suits in New Jersey and California. Plaintiffs attributed cancer to asbestos that was found in J&J products Shower to Shower and baby powder.
What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a fatal form of cancer that affects mesothelium the lining around organs and body cavities. It is most prevalent in the lungs but can be found in the chest and abdomen cavity. Asbestos is the most well-known mesothelioma-related cause, and people who have been exposed to asbestos are at a greater risk of developing this disease.

The plaintiff, who is just 24 years old, was diagnosed with malignant pericardial mesothelioma 2022. The plaintiff attributed his condition to childhood exposure to Johnson & Johnson baby powder. The jury awarded him $25 million.
J&J has been accused of concealing asbestos risks from consumers for decades. The company has a long history of withholding asbestos findings from regulators and even funding asbestos tests to generate the results it desired. Several of the company's talcum powder suppliers have been named in these lawsuits and include Whittaker, Clark & Daniels and Imerys Talc America.
Some women who used talcum for feminine hygiene on sanitary pads or condoms, or in the genital area have developed ovarian and mesothelioma. The lawsuits assert that J&J was aware for more than 40 years that the powder could trigger ovarian cancer and other diseases, but failed to warn consumers.
The symptoms of mesothelioma are abdominal pain and abdominal swelling, abdominal lumps, and persistent coughing. Doctors can diagnose mesothelioma by a physical exam and imaging scans. These could include CT (computer tomography) scans, MRIs and PET or X-rays.
Once a mesothelioma diagnosis is confirmed, patients may undergo surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation. The surgeons can remove affected tissue, based on the location of the tumors. Patients with mesothelioma may have a lifespan less than five. However, aggressive treatments such as extracorporeal tissue transplantation or cytoreduction using hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy can prolong the life of patients.
What causes Mesothelioma?
Like most cancers, mesothelioma is caused when a cell's DNA experiences mutations. These mutations cause the cells to multiply rapidly, forming tumors in the tissues of the body. Asbestos is the leading mesothelioma-related cause. Asbestos exposure is common in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, mining, and transportation. Asbestos can be exposed for between 20 and 40 years prior to the onset of symptoms appearing. Mesothelioma is more prevalent in men than women, and it is usually diagnosed in people who are in their 50s to 70s. The type of mesothelioma a person is usually determined by the region of their body in which they were exposed to asbestos. The majority of mesothelioma patients are diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma that affects the lung. Others are diagnosed with peritoneal melanoma, one type of mesothelioma which affects the abdomen. Additionally, some patients are diagnosed with pericardial mesothelioma, an extremely rare form of the disease that affects the heart's lining (pericardium) and the organ itself.
The symptoms of mesothelioma are shortness of breath, fatigue and abdominal pain, as well as weight loss. In the latter stages of mesothelioma, tumors may spread to other parts which can cause extreme discomfort and discomfort. Other symptoms that are common to mesothelioma are fluid on the lung (pleural effusion) and a loss of appetite, difficulties swallowing and a blockage in the small intestine called a obstruction in the bowel. Mesothelioma can be fatal.
The talcum-powder trial in Oakland involved an individual of 24 years old who was diagnosed with pericardial msothelioma after using J&J baby powder. His lawyers argued that J&J knew that talc was contaminated with asbestos, but didn't warn customers. They also cited a letter in 1998 to a J&J executive which revealed the possibility of asbestos in their products.
This is the latest in a series of high-dollar verdicts against J&J. In March, J&J's Talcum Powder caused ovarian mesothelioma in one woman. Last month, another jury in Missouri handed down $55 million in an identical case. Seven new cases have been added to the MDL talcum powder over the last month, bringing it to 37,522 the total number of lawsuits in the process. The majority of these lawsuits concern women who used J&J's talcum powder for feminine hygiene purposes.

Peritoneal cancer, which forms in the lining of the abdomen is a less prevalent form.
