The Link Between Exposure to Asbestos and Diseases
Medical research has proven that asbestos exposure is linked to a range of non-cancerous as well as malignant diseases. This includes lung cancer, pleural disease and asbestosis.
Asbestos-containing materials can be exposed when disturbed and release fibers into the air. These fibers can then be inhaled and swallowed. It could take several years for symptoms to show up.
Signs and symptoms
Inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to lung diseases, such as mesothelioma or pleural plaques. The fibers can cause irritation to the lung tissue. They also can adhere to the cells of the lungs for a long period of time.
Most of the time it takes years for these conditions to manifest after exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is ingested in many ways, such as when working with asbestos or during demolition, or while renovating a house. This is because the products that contain asbestos are likely to be disturbed, and the tiny fibers could be released into the air.
Inhaling asbestos fibers, they pass through the mouth and nose and are then carried into lung. The asbestos particles are not removed, which is why they accumulate in the lungs, causing irritation and scarring. The body attempts to eliminate asbestos by producing more mucus. However, this is not always enough. The people who have been exposed to large amounts of asbestos have more asbestos in their lungs than those who weren't.
In the worst cases exposure to asbestos may lead to mesothelioma, a rare cancer that affects the lung's lining (pleura) and the lining of the lower digestive tract. Mesothelioma can cause serious and fatal symptoms, such as chest pain, breathing issues and coughing. It normally takes many years for mesothelioma's growth to manifest, and it usually only occurs after heavy exposure to asbestos.
The most commonly reported symptom of asbestos exposure is lung disease, particularly scarring of the lung (asbestosis). This makes it harder to get oxygen in and out of the lungs. X-rays and lung function tests are often used to detect it. A lack of oxygen may cause a bluish tint to the skin.
Other symptoms include breathlessness or chest pain, and chronic coughing. If you believe that you have had asbestos exposure in the past and are suffering from these symptoms, it is recommended to contact your local Veterans' Health Service or GP. If necessary, they can refer you to an expert. Most people who are exposed to asbestos don't have serious diseases, however your GP should be aware of any history.
Diagnosis
When asbestos-containing materials become damaged or disturbed they release tiny fibres into the air. If inhaled, these fibers could get into the lung tissue and cause serious health issues. This includes mesothelioma (cancer of the lining of the chest cavity), lung cancer and asbestosis.
It is often difficult to identify these ailments due to the fact that they have long time to develop - it may take 20 years or more for symptoms to be evident. The first indication that something is wrong can be breathing problems or a persistent cough. This is why it's important to consult your GP if you think you've been exposed to asbestos and are experiencing any symptoms.
Your doctor will ask you about your lifestyle and work and any family history. The doctor will then employ the stethoscope and listen to your lungs in order to detect any unusual sounds. These sounds could be a sign of scarring of the lungs from asbestos exposure. The doctor might also suggest a chest X-ray or CT scan to obtain more in-depth information regarding your lung health and to determine the extent of any damage.
The most frequent symptom of asbestosis is difficulty breathing. The condition is caused by scarring of the lung tissues, as well as the accumulation of fluid around the lung. A doctor will use a stethoscope to listen for sounds that crackle as you breathe. A spirometer is used to measure the capacity of your lungs and flow.
If your doctor suspects that you may have asbestosis, he or she may recommend a course of steroids to ease the inflammation and speed up healing. The doctor will also provide you with breathing exercises you can do at home. This will reduce your symptoms and increase your quality of life.
Pleural plaques are a different asbestosis symptom. They are a thick layer on the lining of your lung. They can be calcified but most are not. They aren't the same as mesothelioma or lung cancer and don't increase the risk of those conditions.
Mesothelioma, an uncommon cancerous form that affects the abdomen's lining and lungs is a rare form of cancer. Mesothelioma takes years to develop so symptoms are usually not recognized until a person is older.
Treatment
Asbestos can trigger serious health issues. While some asbestos-related illnesses are not harmful, some can be fatal. Lung cancer and mesothelioma are two of the most common. Malignant mesothelioma develops on the lining of the chest and abdominal cavities. Malignant mesothelioma typically results from long-term exposure to asbestos. Certain people are at greater risk of developing malignant mesothelioma than others, however, even those who have had minimal exposure to asbestos may still be affected.
If handled improperly asbestos exposure lawsuit settlements -containing materials can release microscopic fibers into the air. These fibers are tiny enough to be able to float in air and adhere to clothing, which makes them able to be swallowed or inhaled. These tiny invisible fibers can penetrate deep into the lungs and stay there for years. They can also trigger cancer and fibrotic lung disease.
Exposure to occupational hazards is the most prevalent way people are exposed. People who worked in mines, factories, construction sites, and shipyards are at the highest danger of exposure. Students who work in homes that are older or in schools and military personnel, are also susceptible to asbestos. Some people are exposed asbestos via exposure to second-hand sources for example, from employees who handle it, or through home renovations that involve old pipes and insulation.
Asbestos is a mineral that occurs naturally. It is found in large natural deposits, or as contaminants in other minerals. Asbestos tremolite (also known as blue asbestos) is found in vermiculite deposits and chrysotile. It is used in the manufacturing of household and building materials, like roofing, flooring, shingles and cement. It is also a common ingredient in automobile clutches, brakes, and transmission components.
Your doctor will be monitoring your condition to determine if it is getting worse. Your doctor may perform breathing tests, chest X-ray, or CT scan to determine how serious the condition is and how well your lungs are functioning. You could be prescribed aerosol medicine to reduce the amount of fluid in your lungs, oxygen through a mask, or a respirator.
Prevention
The most effective method to avoid the risk of developing asbestos-related illnesses is to avoid causing disturbances to asbestos-containing materials (ACM). ACM can continue to function normally and pose no health risk if it is not disturbed. However, if it is damaged by demolition or renovation, the microscopic fibers become airborne and can be breathed in or ingested. Once the fibers are in the body, they may cause damage to organs and lungs. This could lead to mesothelioma or a progressive lung condition known as asbestosis. Mesothelioma and asbestosis are not caused by a single exposure, they can result from repeated exposure, even at low levels of exposure over a period of decades.
People who contract illness from asbestos are usually exposed to asbestos regularly by direct contact or a significant environmental exposure. Construction and ship repair jobs involving demolition, remodeling or renovation of old ships and buildings are among the most hazardous. Other dangers include living with someone who works with asbestos or works in asbestos mines or factories.
Asbestos is composed of a variety of minerals that are naturally occurring. It was widely used for its fire retardant and corrosion resistant properties. When asbestos-containing materials are damaged by the microscopically-sized fibres, they can become airborne. They can be inhaled or eaten. When asbestos fibers are breathed in, they can move through the lungs and other parts of the body which can cause scarring, which eventually can lead to cancer.
The signs of asbestos exposure generally are not evident for 15 to 30 years after the initial exposure. Therefore, asbestos is regarded as a long-term danger.
Asbestos, a hazardous substance, is still present in many old buildings and military housing. It is therefore important that any person other than licensed professionals does not remove, touch or sample any asbestos-containing material that is suspected of being present. It is also essential that any asbestos-containing material which are in the process of being maintained be kept in a sealed and controlled environment to reduce the risk of the fibers becoming airborne.
