Pleural Mesothelioma Symptoms

The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma vary depending on the stage and location. The initial symptoms include breathing difficulties and chest pain. Tumors can spread to the heart lining or diaphragm in later stages.

Pleural effusions can be caused by cancer, tuberculosis, pneumonia and heart disease, pulmonary embolism, and other conditions. They can also be a result of chemotherapy and radiation for mesothelioma or other types of lung cancer.

If the pleural effusion isn't treated, it could cause a lung to become trapped (atelectasis), fluid on the lung (empyema) and respiratory failure. The pleural fluid may also be infected, which can cause pain and fever.

Your doctor can drain pleural liquid to relieve your symptoms. A procedure known as thoracentesis involves a needle or a thin, hollow plastic tube to drain the chest wall. They can remove as much fluid as 6 cups (1.5 litres). They may send the fluid sample to a lab for testing to determine the cause of the pleural effusion. Pleural thickening
