Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure
Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos. The exposure could be at work or in the home.
The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are chest pain, coughing and a dry cough. Other symptoms include abdominal pain, fluid accumulation and testicular carcinoma. There are four types of mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma, the most commonly encountered kind.
Occupational Exposure
Asbestos exposure is the most frequent cause of mesothelioma. This cancer affects the tissues of certain organs like the lungs or abdomen. This toxic mineral, which is utilized in a variety of industries, may cause fine dust to be inhaled and then ingested after it has broken down. Many occupations historically have involved significant exposure to asbestos. These include asbestos insulation workers, plumbers, electrical engineers, shipyard employees and manufacturers of automotive parts such as brake pads and clutches. Between 10 and 15 percent of patients with mesothelioma have a biphasic type that combines epithelioid and sarcomatoid mesotheliom.
Mesothelioma is more common in men than women, and most diagnosed with mesothelioma were exposed to asbestos via workplace exposure. However, the exact reasons for this gender difference remain elusive. It is likely related to more men being employed in industries that frequently employed asbestos, such as construction and manufacturing.
Several studies have shown elevated mesothelioma rates in communities or regions with multiple asbestos-related industrial sources. For example, one study of mesothelioma cases from 70 communities that received contaminated vermiculite from the Libby asbestos mine in Montana showed that residents living within 2000 meters of the mine had an elevated mesothelioma risk.
Genetic Predisposition
In some instances genetics may play a part in mesothelioma. The condition is thought to be caused by hereditary gene changes that affect the DNA repair mechanisms. Researchers have identified a variety of genes that may lead patients to mesothelioma. Certain studies have found that people who have had mesothelioma-related history to be more likely to develop it than those who do not.
