What Does Mesothelioma Mean?

Mesothelioma is a rare condition. It is difficult to diagnose and often misdiagnosed as lung cancer or another common illness such as pneumonia.

Benign mesothelium tumours that are benign

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the mesothelium which is a lining membrane that protects organs inside the body. The mesothelium consists of two layers. There is usually a small amount of liquid between the two layers that allows organs to move around freely. Mesothelioma is a result of malignant (cancerous) mesothelium cell that can expand and cause destruction of surrounding tissue, or even spread to other areas of the body.

Mesothelioma symptoms vary depending on where the tumors form. Three out of four cases of mesothelioma begin in the chest or abdomen but the cancer can begin in other locations like the peritoneum and pericardium.

Benign mesothelioma symptoms are similar to those experienced by people with malignant mesothelioma. Patients may experience shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing and fatigue. These symptoms are usually caused by the accumulation of fluid on the lungs. This causes pressure and causes breathing problems. Some patients develop clubbed fingers which indicates that low levels of oxygen are present in the blood due to the pressure caused by mesothelioma tumors on the lungs.

Doctors can identify benign pleural mesothelioma using the tissue sample or fluid from the area where the tumor is located. The sample of tissue or fluid will be examined under a microscope for cancer cells. If there is no evidence of cancer, doctors will continue to check the patient for any signs of mesothelioma. If cancer is discovered doctors will treat the tumors in accordance with a mesothelioma-specific treatment plan.

Malignant tumours

Malignant mesothelioma can be described as a cancerous tumor that targets the cells that line the internal organs of the body, most commonly the chest and abdomen. It can also occur in the lining around the heart and in the reproductive organs of men and women.

It is a result of exposure to asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral which was employed in many industries prior to the beginning of the 1990s. It typically takes between 20 and 40 years following exposure to develop symptoms. The majority of people diagnosed with mesothelioma are asbestos workers, mostly in the construction, manufacturing or mining industries.

There are various types of mesothelioma depending on the location and the cells affected. The lining of the lungs (called the pleura) is the most well-known type. Other types affect the abdomen's lining (peritoneal mesothelioma) or the lining of the chest wall and diaphragm (pleural mesothelioma).

Doctors differentiate the four types of mesothelioma into four categories, arranged in order of most common to least common: epithelial (most often) as well as sarcomatoid (second most frequently), peritoneal (second lowest) and biphasic. Each group has specific treatment options.

Doctors may also use the tests for fluid samples to aid in making an appropriate diagnosis if they notice the presence of fluid around the lungs (pleural effusion) or in the abdomen (ascites).


Mesothelioma cells can be similar to other cancer cells, so doctors may order various tests to distinguish between the two. These include X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs.

A CT scan creates a three dimensional image of the internal structures of the body. It can help identify the location of mesothelioma tumors and show its thickness. A doctor may use a specific dye to show the cancer.

An MRI is a non-invasive test which uses magnetic fields to create images of the inside of the body without radiation. An MRI can be used by doctors to determine the extent of the mesothelioma in the body.

If a patient is diagnosed with mesothelioma pericardial, doctors may employ an echocardiogram to assess the condition of the heart. Echocardiograms are a form of ultrasound that uses sound waves to capture images of the interior of the heart and chest. The images that result are displayed on the screen.

A biopsy is the most accurate diagnostic method for mesothelioma, however, it can be an invasive procedure. To find mesothelioma tumors doctors can make use of fine needle aspiration and more surgical biopsy that is invasive. The biopsy is used by specialists to determine which of three types of mesothelioma cells exist in the tumor of the patient.

Treatment
