Best Over-Ear Wireless Headphones
If you're in the market for a pair of wireless over-ear headphones take a look at these. They're not just comfortable to wear, but they come with excellent active noise cancellation that blocks out background noises, allowing you to concentrate on your music.
Focal's wireless headphones debut are an audiophile's dream. They have a full sound profile with enough thump to suit EDM however vocals and instruments aren't excluded. They have an app companion to the music and ANC presets that allow you to tailor the sound to your preference.
Sony WH-1000XM5
Sony's WH-1000XM5 is the latest generation of its popular headphones that offer adaptive noise cancellation (ANC) to cancel out the background sounds. With a staggering 27-hour playback time they are ideal for long commutes and long trips. They also have a neat feature that allows you to connect them to two Bluetooth devices at the same time, which makes it easy to switch between calls and music. The WH1000XM5 is attractive to anyone who is interested in sustainability because of its minimalist, sleek design and environmentally friendly packaging.
The XM5s feature a lighter and more comfortable headband. It can be worn comfortably over your ear and puts less pressure on your skull. They also look more fashionable and have a sleek style that is a perfect match with most outfits. They're also now available in a gorgeous matte black that's even better-looking than the previous generation's glossy black.
One of the best features of the WH1000XM5 is its smart noise cancellation feature. It detects when you take off the headphones and then pauses the audio. When you put them back on, they will automatically resume. This is a fantastic way to save battery, and it's a great option.
In terms of audio quality, the XM5s excel in both LDAC codec support and DSEE Extreme audio upscaling. Tim Commerford's work on bass is exhibited in Rage Against the Machine's Bullet in the Head, a brooding track. Billie Eilish's Bad Guy features a subtle, but deliberate vocal fade.
For those who exercise and living in humid climates A word of caution: the WH1000XM5s do not have an IP rating. They shouldn't be used near water. There's even a disclaimer within the manual that advises you to don't sweat into the headset, or use it in the rain.
Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2
The PX7 S2 is a refreshing upgrade to B&W's flagship wireless headphone model, the PX7. The Series 2 is not just an incremental update, but a significant improvement in audio quality and ANC. The design also gets a little more refined, with a style which is more mature than sleek, modern-day looks of Sony's XM5 and Apple's AirPods Max.
The headphones can be switched off and on using the slider switch. There are also dedicated buttons for volume, play/pause, and to navigate through your music collection. There's a programmable button on the left ear cup that can be remapped to trigger your voice assistant, and there's also an ambient pass-through mode that lets you listen to what's happening around you without taking off the headphones.
Streaming an 16-bit/44.1kHz master of Dennis Wilson's River Song from his Pacific Ocean Blue album via the S2s The soundstage is vast and rich, with layered harmonies and atmospheric textures that are clearly heard. The vocals are centered and there's plenty of low-end amplitude.
One area where the S2s aren't as good is in EQ control: you can increase or decrease the bass and treble by 6dB, but there aren't any EQ presets to help you find your preferred balance. The majority of listeners won't be affected by this, but those who like to alter their audio need to consider a different option.
Overall, the PX7 S2s are the perfect choice for those who are looking for a noise-canceling headphone with a premium finish and feel. While they're not as flexible as the XM5s mentioned above, they are still a great choice for most listeners. You'll have to decide if the superior ANC and audio quality is worth the slightly more expensive price.
Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless
The Bose QuietComfort 45 is a pair of wireless over-ear headphones that offer excellent noise cancellation. They also come with a battery life of 24 hours. They are light and comfortable enough to wear throughout the house. They can be controlled using the built-in buttons or an app companion, but the ability to customize is restricted (sorry, no equalizer). You can choose from different sound profiles based on the circumstance, for instance when you're travelling or working at home. The QC45s have an option called Aware Mode that allows outside sounds to be heard using ANC. This can be useful for those who want to hear children and traffic when out and out and about.
The audio quality of the headphones isn't as great as that of the WH-1000XM5s, but it's still quite good. The bass isn't overpowering, but it does give decent depth and a decent amount of the sound's texture. The mids and the highs are smooth and there is no harshness or shrillness.
One issue is that QC45s tend to prefer the higher frequencies, which may cause an occasional sibilance while listening to certain songs. This is not a major issue and can be easily fixed by adjusting the headphone settings in the software.
The controls are intuitive and simple to use. The left earcup turns off the headphones on and off, controls the music playback, and manages Bluetooth pairing. A multi-functional Action Button is also provided. It functions as a power toggle and voice assistant, as well as controlling volume. There's a microphone for phone calls, and Siri or Alexa is supported.
Audio-Technica ATH-M20x
The ATH M20x is a stylish pair that offers great sound at a reasonable cost. They are well built with a sturdy feel to them. The earcups and headband are made of plastic, however, they are sturdy enough to last for a long time. The ear cups are adjustable by 15 degrees, so they can be placed in a comfortable position on most ears.
The Audio-Technica ATH-M20x has Bluetooth 5.0 which lets you listen to your music wirelessly. The battery longevity is impressive, with up to 30 hours of music listening time. They come with a USB-C cable to charge.
Utilizing the headphones is simple. Three buttons are situated on the left ear cup and allow you to control the playing back of music as well as other functions. These buttons allow you to pause, change tracks, and adjust the volume. The ATH-M20x also has a microphone that can be used to make calls or voice commands. The headset comes with low latency, which makes it ideal for video gaming and gaming.
The ATH-M20x headphones are great for some styles of music however, they are not for all. Vocals can sound flat and there is no real bass response. The high frequencies sound clear and clear. They are well-known for their Treble. They are a great option for classical, pop and jazz.
The ATH-M20x is a light headphone that weighs just under 190g without the cord. The ear cups are well padded, but they cannot fold. They are heavy to carry around in a backpack and may not fit easily into the bag of a handbag. They don't have an untidy cable, either. The Audio-Technica ATH-M40x is a better option for those looking for a more portable set of headphones. It is more comfortable with a folding design, swiveling the ear cups, which lay flat and removable cables. jbl headphones wireless 's more expensive, but offers better isolation and more bass.
Skullcandy Dime 2
The Dime 2 is Skullcandy’s best-sounding true wireless headphones. It has a small, compact case that's simple to slip into pockets or purses. It also comes with several ear gel sizes to accommodate different ears. It's also lighter than wireless earbuds that we've tested.
The dual microphones are great for picking up your voice when you call and also reducing background noise. However, they're not suitable for use outdoors because environmental sounds can overtake your voice. They also struggle with windy environments and can clip some of your speech.
The earbuds are excellent sounding despite these minor flaws. They have a clear, clear high end that doesn't spill over into the mids. They also have a decent amount of mid-bass to give your music a bit of impact.
They also have a good dual-tap feature to perform voice commands, although they're not as intuitive as Apple's AirPod Pro. You must place your thumb on the stem's bottom to ensure stability, and then press the logo to execute the command. It's not the most convenient and isn't like a pinch-gear system.
The earbuds can last for around four hours with a single charge. They also have an option to charge them quickly that lets them last for two more hours. The earbuds are also IPX4 tested for their resistance to sweat and water. The earbuds are packaged with a carrying case that features two openings that can accommodate the earbuds, as well as a loop for attaching them to clothing. The case is stylish and available in multiple colors, including Doritos red. They are available on the internet for less than $30 USD.
