Their active noise cancelling performs even better than before, removing the background noise, and they have a longer continuous battery life than a lot of competitors.

These headphones are Bluetooth 5.0 compatible and Sony LDAC is also compatible with. These headphones can transfer high-resolution audio, but you'll need compatible devices and streaming services. The WH-1000XM4s is also able to connect two Bluetooth devices simultaneously and automatically switch between the two when required. You can enable this feature via the Sony Headphones Connect app and it works very well.

One subtle improvement over the XM3 is the sensitiveness of their touch panels. They respond more quickly to the tap of the panel, which makes them easier to control during calls or listen to media. Sony has added a feature to make voice calls more clear and precise during calls. This is a distinct and pleasant addition.

While the WH1000XM4s aren't perfect, they're one of the top wireless headphones we've ever tested. They are comfortable and well-made. They also have an energy-efficient battery that can last for more than 30 continuous hours. They can be used in a passive manner using a TRS cable. This is perfect for travel or preserving power.

The WH-1000XM4s are better over the Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2 Wireless over-ears. The Sonys are more comfy and their ANC can block out more background noise. The B&Ws feature an EQ that is more flexible, as well as an app companion to adjust the audio quality. However, the B&Ws come with an improved design, and they're able to pair with two Bluetooth devices at once. Additionally, they support aptX HD and feature an AI-driven engine that tries to upscale compressed music to high-resolution. This is referred to as DSEE Extreme and it does an excellent job of improving the clarity of music, particularly when listening to lossless audio files.

2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort45 noise-canceling headset is the most recent version of a headset which has become a favorite among commuters and passengers across the world. Instead of reinventing the wheel, the new model retains the same formula that made its predecessor so popular, adding the USB-C port, which is better at cancelling noise and longer battery life.

These over-ear Bose headsets have a premium feeling and look, much like the QC 35 II headphones that were before them. The headband, made of plastic, offers an incredibly solid feel due to the hinges made of metal at pivot points. They also have the ratcheting mechanism that is familiar when you expand or retract your earcups. The cups have soft cushions that fit comfortably over the ears and do not apply pressure to your head. When folded they weigh 238 grams. They can be paired with a sweater or coat because they function even when not on your head.

Despite their reputation as comfortable headphones however, the QC45s don't offer the best sound at this price point. The frequencies are relatively flat and lack the details that higher-end headphones may be able to bring out. The upper registers tend to be boosted and is suitable for most music, but could be a problem for delicate or intricate music genres. The bass is good, but is lacking punch.

The possibility of pauseing the playback when you remove the headset is a feature absent. This is standard in this price range and is something that Bose's rivals have long offered. Another omission is the absence of an in-app EQ. Bose offers preset EQs within the app, but it would be nice to have a manual control.

You can connect to your tablet or smartphone via Bluetooth 5.0 with support for multipoint and the more advanced codecs such as aptX Adaptive. Download the Bose Audio App to adjust your headset's audio and voice settings.

The QC45s also come with four built-in microphones that listen to your voice during calls. The headphones have good call quality, but they don't allow you to silence the voice when playing back like other wireless headphones. Update: As of February 2022, a firmware update to the QC45s provided manual EQ options in the audio app which is a welcome improvement.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal is a French audio brand known for its high-performance headphones that last for a long time, comfort and a design that makes listeners feel like they're listening to something unique. The Bathys are their first wireless noise cancelling headphones. They look and sound stunning. They also have a built in high performance USB DAC which means you can use them for wired and wireless listening.

The Bathys have a very good battery life, with Focal claiming 30 hours of continuous Bluetooth playtime. We actually got more out of them with more than 40 hours of playtime on average of a single charge. If you are required to charge the headphones then the indicator light on the right earcup will turn red.

For headphones for this price, they offer lots of features. They can be used with multiple devices simultaneously and have automatic pairing. (You have to select your source device manually every time you listen.) The headphones come with an inbuilt microphone that can be used with voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa. The headphones come with an easy-to use interface that makes it simple to control music and make calls.

Bathys over-ear headphones perform well in our noise cancellation test, reducing ambient sound by an average of 9 decibels. This isn't as impressive as the ANC in the Sony WH-1000XM4 or Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless, however it's still quite effective.

In our tests of headphone sound quality in our tests of headphone sound quality, the Bathys did well overall, with a a frequency response that mostly matches the SoundGuys headphone preference curve, with just minor differences in the mids and bass. The Bathys are bassy sound profile which can make instruments, vocals and cymbals look a bit obscure.

You can wear them anywhere without fearing that other people will listen to your music. Their mic has passable quality of recording via Bluetooth with only slight distortion in the mid to the treble range.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless are a new update to the company's flagship Bluetooth headphones. The last pair, the Momentum 3, was a decent but not a standout in the category. The latest model is improved over the previous generation with more sleek design, better gesture controls and massive battery life.

The improvements are subtle, but can make for an over-ear pair of headphones that feels like an upgrade. The Momentum 4s are flat and don't fold. They come with a hardshell case to protect them while traveling. They also follow the style of a number of other recent Bluetooth headphones, including those from Sony and Bowers & Wilkins, to be incredibly device-agnostic. best over ear headphones wireless under 100 can work with both Android phones and Apple iPhones, however they don't have the extra features (like Find My support and head-tracked Spatial Audio) that are available on the AirPods.

The Momentum 4s are not designed to put pressure on your neck or ears. However they can be uncomfortable when worn in the house or during longer listening sessions. They can move around on your head, causing intense head movements. This can cause them wake up unexpectedly, which can be distracting while listening to music or making calls. They shut down automatically after 15 minutes and can be switched off manually by pressing the power button.
