These are just a few of the highlights from my poker journal. Those don't say "poker", but for me they are vital to continued poker success. Many of my journal entries were used as the basis of chapters in this book. They have since been expanded into articles on the topic.
If you're just starting poker or if winning is your goal, then you need to choose easy opponents to bet against. This may sound obvious but it is true that some players are more successful than others due to their experience and luck. Also, if you are having a bad time, decrease the size of bet or simply walk away and leave it for another day.

Don't slow play big pairs. After studying thousands hands involving big pairs (Queens/Kings/Aces), we know that aggressive play is the best. Playing aggressively preflop can result in three outcomes. Your opponents fold and you are the winner, your opponents call/raise to win the hand, and you have the highest hand. Or, your opponents call/raise to lose the hand. If you have Queens / Kings or Aces, your opponent has a much better chance of having a better hand than you. You can lose the hand if you play slow.
You should be alert for newcomers very early on. They are dangerous, and newbies who play the game recklessly can be dangerous. People who go all in every hand won't make the tournament, but they may poach your stack. If you think that going all-in too early is a good strategy, you won't win many poker tournaments.
