Best Over the Ear Headphones
Wireless headphones let you listen to music and podcasts without the requirement to connect an audio wire to your device. They're ideal for public transportation, at work, or at home.
Wireless over-ear headphones can have an elegant design and superior noise cancellation. They typically come with a stylish storage case.
Soundcore Life Q30
These over-ears are a major improvement over the Soundcore Life 2 of late-2018. They look better and feel more durable and have a more polished appearance. They're still mostly made of plastic, but the hinges are a bit more secure and the soft leather cups are bigger. You can swap the 3.5mm cord for a higher quality USB-C cable and connect them to portable Hi-Res devices and stationary players. They also have dual mics built in that worked well in our tests with FaceTime, Skype and Microsoft Teams calls.
The Soundcore app comes with a broad range of EQ presets that can be saved and tweaked to listen to podcasts or music in the style you like. This is what makes these headphones stand out from other ANC headphones, and the Soundcore app is extremely simple to use.
The Q30's 40mm speakers effectively block out the majority of ambient noise when ANC is turned on. This results in a very pleasant listening experience. They have a natural sound signature that is a bit on the treble side, which some may be unable to reproduce bass (we had better results using the Bass Booster equalizer). You can fix this easily with the Soundcore App, which has an 8-band Equalizer.
The left earcup features the power button, a pairing button, and USB-C charging port. The right earcup features buttons for volume up/down, play/pause and volume up/down. By double-clicking these controls, you can skip tracks or repeat the previous one. They also come with an option to speak to them, so you can request to change the mode or set an alarm. You can also cover the right earcup with your hand to activate ambient modes, to allow you to hear everything around you without having to remove the headphones.
The battery life on these headphones is fantastic as well. In our tests with ANC turned on, the Q30 ran for almost an hour longer than the other headphones. This lets you enjoy the long flight, or a long day at work. They can be charged quickly by using the USB-C cable that comes with them and you'll get an alert when they're getting empty.
Focal Bathys Wireless
Focal's Bathys Wireless is a pair of high-quality over-ear Bluetooth headphones that offers both active noise cancellation, as well as Bluetooth playback. They're designed to be a premium high-end headphones that are ideal for listening to music and podcasts on the go, but are a great choice to listen to audiophile music at home as well. The headphones are a little bit more expensive than similar headphones, but their superior audio quality is what makes them stand out.
The Focal Bathys come in a small attractive white box with a fabric finish. It includes all the accessories you'll need. The package includes a fold-flat headphone carrying case, USB-C-to-USB-C cable, 1.2mm SE cable and an audio adapter.
The battery's capacity is 600mAh, which will last for a whole day of casual listening. They also come with an audio input that you can connect wired. When they're wirelessly connected, they're connected via Bluetooth and you can control their functions using an app (now named Focal & Naim which is probably in the same vein as their English sister brand Naim's network-aware audio products) or by pressing the button located on the left earcup that allows you to switch between ANC profiles such as'silent','soft' 'transparent' and full.
The app allows you to change various settings like the brightness of the LED, EQ presets including a'music' profile that sounds brighter and more neutral than the other ones and also their battery duration. It also lets you to select the ANC mode and the level, as well as setting an 'acoustic' environment that will adjust the sensitivity of your audio to simulate how it would sound like if it were placed in a room with different acoustics.
The Focal Bathys have bass-rich, rich sound profiles that adds more punch and warmth to your favorite tracks. This means that instruments and vocals sound muted, while details such as cymbals may be less prominent than other headphones. The headphones are also less effective at active noise cancellation compared to other over-ears that have higher-end technology, such as the Sony WH1000XM5 and Apple AirPods Max.
Sony WH-1000XM5
Sony headphones are renowned for their high-end quality and the WH1000XM5 is no exception. It is the best of the mainstream over ear headphone market and borders the luxury lifestyle segment where brands such as Apple, Montblanc, Bang & Olufsen and Montblanc are located. The XM5s are expensive however, if you can afford it find them, there's not a better pair of wireless over-ear headphones.
The XM5s are loaded with features to help listeners and, in a few instances, automate tasks they'd otherwise have to deal with manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme engine (which upscales compressed music to near-high resolution) is also included, as is support for Bluetooth's LDAC technology. This lets high-quality music to be streamed at bitrates that are higher than Bluetooth. There's even a built-in microphone to allow making calls without hands.
Like the previous generation of WH headphones, the XM5s excel in noise cancellation. They're among the most efficient headphones for cutting out constant drones found in train and underground carriages. The XM5s do a great job of separating listeners from noise of busy streets and airports, too.
Sound quality is also excellent. The XM5s may not be as clear in the low frequencies as the XM4, however, there's a greater sense of clarity and openness, too. For example, the bass on Rage Against The Machine's Bullet in the Head flexes the Sonys' muscles with real force and definition without flattening the other elements. Similarly, Massive Attack's brooding Angel showcases the XM5's ability to create precise and precise bass notes.
The battery life is fantastic and can last up to 30 hours of listening time when ANC is on and 40 hours if off. This is more than enough to last for a weekend getaway or a few days of heavy use.
The XM5s do not come with waterproof or dust-proof. Sony actually recommends not sweating on them or wearing them in the rain. This may not be a problem for everyone else, but for those who spend much time in the gym or live in a humid location it could be a major problem.
Apple AirPods Max
Apple AirPods Max is a pair over-ear wireless headphones that come with Bluetooth technology and noise cancellation. Apple designed dynamic drivers measuring 40mm, with a neutral sound profile that emphasizes highs and mids without going overboard. They are great for movies and music. They also have higher fidelity than most rival headphones.
The headphones have a lightweight build that feels comfortable on the head. The earcups, which are made of memory foam, are covered with woven fabric, fit comfortably over the ears and do not place pressure on the sides or forehead. The ear cups also tilt and rotate to accommodate various head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges provide a strong, but not too strong clamping force to ensure that the earcups remain in place throughout listening sessions.
A small button on the the right ear cup can be used to toggle noise cancellation modes. You can also utilize the jog dial that is a push-button similar to the digital Crown on the Apple Watch. You can twist it for volume control, and press it once, twice, or three times to playback the controls. Pressing and holding the button invokes Siri. The buttons are easy to use and well-placed however, I would like to see an option to power off or switch off the headphones when they are not in use. The headphones go into standby when they are removed from your ears or if they are placed in their case. They come back into use when you place them on your head.
Spatial audio is another cool feature. It utilizes accelerometers, gyroscopes, and iPhones or iPads to determine where you're moving. Then, it adjusts the sound so that they appear to originate from that particular location. This creates an immersive theater experience for videos and movies made in 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. Only iOS devices can be used to listen to spatial audio.
The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I'd feel slightly smug about walking into an Apple Store and spending $549 on the headphones if I knew they'd be beaten in a year by the new model. AirPods Pro are more expensive however they offer superior battery life and more advanced features.
