Auto Insurance - What Is Washington D.C. Doing?
When the topic of auto insurance was addressed, one question that frequently came up was whether or not Senator Kent Washington (D-WA) was a good candidate for this position? Of course, many people are quite happy to have somebody in Washington D.C. to protect them and their vehicle from liability claims, but it doesn't necessarily mean that you want to see someone with their finger on the auto insurance pulse all of the time. After all, Washington D.C. has a long history with insurance companies. Let's take a look at how Senator Washington has made moves to lower rates while protecting drivers from the worst cases of injury and death.

One thing that Washington D.C. was no doubt proud of is the Washington Automobile Insurance Rate Commission (WAIRTC). It is the independent regulatory board responsible for ensuring that the insurance industry and Washington D.C. residents are properly insured and that they are protected from the worst case scenarios. WAIRTC works to keep rates affordable by regulating and monitoring premiums to ensure that they aren't too high or too low. They also investigate and take action when they receive complaints about rates. While this may seem like a great idea, there are some critics who feel that WAIRTC is somewhat overreaching.

A group called Protect Our Future Now has sued Senator Washington and other members of Congress for what they say is an excessive amount of regulation and overstepping of authority. In fact, they argue that there are too many regulations, rules and regulations, and that WAIRTC does little to protect consumers.

As Washington D.C. moves into its second year with WAIRTC, the organization has had a bit of a change of heart. This is understandable because of the way that Washington D.C. has had an influx of new laws in recent years that have taken away some of the more basic consumer protection protections from insurance companies. For example, if an individual feels as though their coverage was underwritten incorrectly, they can file a complaint against the insurer. If the claim is determined to be legitimate, then the insurance company has the option of either paying a portion of the medical bill or providing a refund to the victim.

linkedin.com of the new regulations from Washington D.C. relates to the renewal of car insurance policy. According to the new law, an insurer cannot raise a rate for a car insurance policy within a certain period of time without first receiving consumer written approval. The law also states that insurance companies cannot deny coverage based on a pre-existing condition, unless it affects the ability to get to a court case and is proven to be serious enough to make it worth the risk.

As with all things that have to do with Washington D.C., some have praised Washington D.C.'s efforts to regulate auto insurance. Senator Kent Washington, himself, has stated that he is glad that WAIRTC is in place. and has said that it is important that the state is in a position to help Washington D.C. residents get fair insurance rates. "I am glad to see the WAIRTC act, especially since it is one that allows the state to protect drivers and prevent insurance companies from taking advantage of citizens who are innocent of any wrongdoing," Washington D.C. State Senator Ann Rivers stated.

There are still many concerns with Washington D.C.'s attempts at regulating auto insurance. One thing that has been noticed is that the WAIRTC has a tendency to move at a snail's pace. Some say that the state is not using its resources well and that the agency doesn't seem to do a good job of keeping up with changing markets. For example, Washington D.C. is still trying to figure out where they will get the best rates, which is something that needs to be done quickly.

As of now, there has been no ruling or new laws passed by Washington D.C., which could lead to any changes with regards to auto insurance rates. However, in the mean time, if an individual can get the best rate for the car they own, then that is what they should do. When the time comes that Washington D.C. is ready to pass new laws, it is possible that Washington D.C. might have to offer auto insurance discounts.
