Microorganisms

Over 60% of the world is so small that it can only be seen with a microscope.
We call them microbes.
There is estimated to be about two - three billion different species of microbes. And we can't live without them!!
They generate oxygen in the atmosphere and fix nitrogen in our soils so plants can grow, forming the base of our everyday food chains.

Bacteria - these generally have a bad reputation - but it's actually unfair. Yes, some of them can be very harmful and life threatening but lots of bacteria species actually extremely beneficial. We have (approximately) 100 billion bacterial cells living on our skin alone and many in our digestive system.
Smelly armpits??
The odour is actually being produced by the bacteria that lives there.
We've spent the last 50 years (A WHOLE LOT OF TIME) trying to kill all bacteria but we're now starting to realise and understand more about bacteria and the benefits they have. They can help boost our immune system and aid digestion. Some bacterial species are even being investigated as producers of insulin to potentially replace intake of needles in the future!

Fungi - mushrooms on your pizza - those are obviously big enough to see but there's also many types of fungi's that may be too small to be seen by a naked eye like: some yeasts & moulds. We have yeasts to thank for bread that rises and fermenting in some alcohols... On the downside, there are many types of fungi's that cause diseases such as: athlete's foot, dandruff, nail fungus, ringworm, oral candidiasis, aspergillosis, valley fever & histoplasmosis.

Protozoa is made up of a single cell. They are usually found in water bodies and soil and make up the backbone of many different food webs by providing nutrients for other organisms to grow.
