The Menu Movie (DVD) Review film
The new the menu film from Searchlight Pictures takes a savage chunk out of our tradition of chef worship. It’s a darkish horror film with edge-of-your-seat suspense that explores the dynamics of diners and chefs. Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) is a self-professed “artist” who creates absurd culinary experiences for an elite clientele. Slowik’s ruthless employees is skilled to operate more like an army unit than restaurant staff. They pipe gel, tweeze microgreens, and say issues like “Yes, Chef!” and “I love you, Chef!” on command. This is a kitchen with a psychopath on the wheel, and each guest will feel like an unwilling participant in an experiment of psychological and bodily degradation.
