MK Ultra
This hard-hitting documentary looks at Project MKUltra, a series of experiments on humans designed and undertaken by the CIA, some of which were illegal. The program investigated the effects of mind-bending substances and techniques, such as the administration of drugs (especially LSD), electroshock, hypnosis, sensory deprivation and all manner of verbal and sexual abuse. The research was conducted at a number of institutions, including colleges and pharmaceutical companies, which were used as fronts. Some of the results were disturbing, such as the death of military scientist Frank Olson, who committed suicide after he was given LSD during a test administered by the CIA. Another victim was a man who would become known as the Unabomber.

MKUltra was created on the orders of CIA director Allen Dulles, and ran by Sidney Gottlieb, who was also in charge of the CIA's 1950s and 1960s assassination attempts against Soviet and Chinese leaders. It was a very dark time, and the CIA was desperate to find something that would give it an edge against its Cold War rivals.

SRA Survivors Gottlieb, a brilliant chemist, created poisons and found new ways of surreptitiously administering them. He also invented gadgets that CIA agents could use to gather intelligence. He was one of the most dangerous men in the world. But he was also obsessed with mind control, and believed that he had found a way to subdue the will of humans through drugs and other methods.

Among the people who worked with Gottlieb under MKUltra was a man called George Hunter White, who ran a safe house in New York where he lured people off the street to take LSD while CIA officers watched through a one-way mirror. White was a man who lived on the edge of the law, and used narcotics and alcohol freely. He had a special dislike for Billie Holiday, whom he accused of flaunting her wealth by wearing furs and driving big cars.

The Times reported on the MKUltra scandal in 1977, and it sparked outrage. The Senate demanded that a federal program be established to locate victims and prosecute those responsible for the illegal experimentation. But the investigations were hobbled by the CIA's destruction of records. In addition, those who did testify before Congress often forgot what they had done in the name of MKUltra. And even though MKUltra's horrors were well documented in the press, not a single researcher or CIA official faced prosecution for his role in the program.
