The Fall Movie Review but
The fall film is one of those films that’s finest enjoyed on an enormous screen, snuggled into a blanket with a pumpkin spice latte. It’s the sort of film that doesn’t actually fit into any particular genre, but is a superb alternative for anybody who needs to get within the mood for Halloween without getting too scared. Fall starts strong, with a brilliantly tense mountain-scaling sequence (bonus factors for referencing the delightfully self-indulgent rock-climbing setpiece in Mission: Impossible 2) that establishes Becky and Hunter because the stranded duo the film is all about. But it’s the abyss that comes subsequent — the climb to the top of a 2,000-foot TV tower, the place they don't have any means down and no cell reception for calling for help — that puts the film on shaky ground.

Mann has no downside ratcheting up pressure on the teetering tower, with extreme close-ups of the rusting, unstable construction and sound design hammering house each creak and thud. But as quickly as the women attain the top, they’re left with a precarious teetering platform that can’t support them even in a minimal wind, a lot much less a full-on gust. It’s a good distance down with no apparent way again up, and it’s not clear whether they’ll make it to the underside alive.

It’s at this point that the film begins to really feel a lot like one of the many location-based thrillers which have populated theaters and VOD lately. There are elements that evoke a tense clench and some eye rolls, however general the movie never feels credible. Director Scott Mann fudges medical, architectural, and natural occurrences to create scenes that push plot points past their believability limits.

Fortunately, Grace Caroline Currey and Virginia Gardner are more than capable of holding the audience’s consideration as they bicker about subplot twists and struggle to survive their teetering tower predicament. While the actresses aren’t precisely Academy Award material, they carry plenty of character to their roles and sell the hazard of clutching a metal pyre dangling from the aspect of an unfinished skyscraper. The incontrovertible fact that they’re truly able to pulling it off is a miracle of moviemaking.

The script for Fall isn’t excellent, but it’s nonetheless a compelling story about the significance of embracing life and the power of friendship. It’s the sort of film that deserves a large release so it can find an audience and inspire individuals to look up at the stars, take a deep breath, and climb something.
