Online Gambling and Tax Revenue in the First Half of 2009
Online gambling companies consider summer as the "dead time". It's hot and many people prefer to sleep in bed instead of going outside. This means that online gambling companies need to find other ways to continue to operate. To achieve this, they offer generous bonuses during summer. They offer less lucrative promotions during the winter months. The holidays however are extremely profitable for online gambling businesses.

Legality of online gambling

Online gambling is not without controversy. While some states have laws that prohibit online gambling, some states have not yet granted licenses. The United States Department of Justice is concerned about online gambling as well as the money laundering that could occur. It is difficult to track down transactions made via the Internet because they are not traceable.

Online gambling became more popular in the latter part of the 1990s. In 1996, there were only fifteen gambling sites online at the time, but by the end of the decade, there were more than 200. According to a Frost & Sullivan report, the industry generated more than $830 million in revenue in 1998. In 1998 the first online poker rooms were launched. During this time the bill was introduced in the US Senate called the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act. The bill would have barred U.S. citizens from accessing these websites. The bill was eventually modified and signed by President George W. Bush on October. Despite this setback, online gaming is still featured in the news.

In https://mitosweb.com , the Department of Justice issued an opinion that had implications far beyond the legality of lotteries on the internet. The opinion took the Wire Act to cover "sporting events" and excluded other types of gambling. This decision opened the doors to lotteries and casinos online.

The online gambling industry requires an minimum age

Gambling online is a rapidly expanding industry, with revenues reaching $46 billion in the US alone. This figure is expected to increase to $94 billion by 2024. The existing laws must be updated to accommodate this expansion. While 18-year-olds can still fight in war however, the minimum age required to play online casino is 18.

Age requirements differ across states. For example, in Australia you must be at least 18 years of age in order to gamble online. In Portugal, you must be at least 21 years of age. This age requirement only applies to native Portuguese players. Players from the UK must be at minimum 18 years old. In the United States, you must be at minimum 21 years old to be able to gamble with real money. There are some exceptions to this rule, for instance Minnesota, Idaho and Alaska where the minimum age for real money-based gambling is either 19 or 16.

Each state has its own gambling age minimum. While federal law doesn't prohibit minors from gambling, states do have the power to create their own rules. Certain states allow minors younger than 18 to bet on cruise ships while others prohibit it entirely.

Tax revenue from online gaming

The first half of the year has proven to be a good time for tax revenue from online gambling. In the first six months of this year the state of Nevada recorded $87.8 million in taxes, both local and state-wide, from online gambling, an increase from $34.7 million in the same period last year. According to the state, online gambling is expected to make up between 20 and 28% of the total tax revenue from casinos.

In October, online gambling brought in record $109.7 million in revenue, which is up 7.1 percent over the previous month. This includes free play revenue of $98.9 million and payments to the state of Nevada of $20.3 million. Since January 1, online gambling has contributed $220.8million to the state's budget.
