People who have addiction problems use drugs or alcohol because they don’t know how to deal with difficult life situations in healthy ways. They often develop a tolerance and need more and/or higher doses of the drug to get the same effect, or they may experience withdrawal symptoms when they stop using the drug. Drugs and alcohol can also lead to other problems, including poor nutrition, sexual problems, criminal activity, health problems and social isolation.
There is hope for recovery from addiction! Research and experience have shown that anyone can recover from mental and substance abuse disorders. Recovery-oriented systems of care are widely embraced by states, communities, healthcare providers, peers and families. They provide a framework for establishing and maintaining recovery, and they incorporate the values of hope, self-determination and personal responsibility.
The goal of treatment is to help an individual regain control of their life by resuming productive functioning in the family, work and community. It is a personal journey that involves recognition and acceptance of problem behaviors, changes in thinking and behavior, and a commitment to a new way of living without the use of alcohol or other drugs.
An evaluation by an addiction professional determines the nature and extent of a person’s problems and identifies appropriate treatment options. These may include an intervention, outpatient treatment and/or day treatment programs or residential care at a rehab facility or hospital. Treatment may involve counseling (individual and/or group), education, vocational services, case management, family services and life skills training.
Medications are an important part of many addiction treatment programs. For example, methadone and levo-alpha acetylmethadone can be used to treat opiate addiction, and bupropion (Zyban) is an effective medication for some people who are addicted to nicotine. In addition to medications, behavioral therapy is an important component of addiction treatment. It helps individuals develop and practice healthier coping and problem-solving skills, replace harmful behaviors with more constructive ones, improve interpersonal relationships, and cope with depression or anxiety.
greaterthanaddiction Remaining in treatment for an adequate period of time is critical to a successful outcome. Leaving treatment prematurely can lead to relapse and a return to drug or alcohol use. Treatment providers often help individuals access support services such as housing, transportation and child care, assist with court advocacy and make referrals to other human service agencies.
Continued involvement in recovery support groups decreases the likelihood of relapse. Your therapist or counselor can help you find a local recovery support group or online resources. You can also ask your doctor for recommendations. Also, be sure to eat well, sleep enough and exercise regularly. It’s hard to be a good support person for someone with addiction if you aren’t taking care of yourself. Remember the old adage “you can’t pour from an empty cup.” Make sure to set aside time for yourself.
