5 Must-Know Headphones Techniques To Know For 2023
Best Over-Ear Headphones

Over-ear headphones are designed to surround your ears and immerse you in the music. They are usually tuned for audiophiles and feature features like active noise cancellation and control apps.

The Focal Bathys are a wireless speaker with ANC and a mobile application for tweaking the EQ and presets. They also support hi-res audio for wired listening through USB-C.

Sony WH-1000XM5

The WH1000XM5 earphones from Sony are the latest upgrade in their noise cancelling lineup. The headphones have a new design and enhanced ANC. They also come with many of the same features, but with a superior sound quality and higher-end materials.

With only 250g, they're light for over-ear ANC headsets. They're very comfortable to wear, no matter if you're listening to or reading an audiobook. The headband features a friction rod design that is similar to the Grado Labs SR60x, which prevents your ears getting too cold.

The WH-1000XM5 comes with a distinct sonic signature that is created to please casual music listeners as well as serious audiophiles. It is tuned with a slight increase in bass, but it's not harsh or blazing. The earphones feature a wide and wide soundstage, as well as good instrument separation. This allows you to be able to hear the finer details of your music. The earcups also feature touch controls that are responsive and intuitive to use. Swipe up or down to adjust the volume. You can also swipe forward to listen to the next song, backwards to hear the previous track. The headphones are capable of connecting to two devices simultaneously and due to an inbuilt sensor, they will automatically pause the playback when removed from your head. You can activate ambient mode by placing your palm on the right-ear cup. This lets you hear the sounds around you without having to take off the headphones.

They can also be connected with your voice assistant. Bluetooth low-energy is also supported, as well as high-resolution audio (via LDAC). They come with a sturdy carrying case made from top quality fabric, as well as an USB-C cable for charging. The headphones work with most Android and iOS smartphones and computers that run Windows and macOS. The battery longevity of the WH-1000XM5 is exceptional. In our battery test we recorded 31 hours and 53 minutes with the ANC on which was higher than Sony's advertised 30 hour battery life.

The WH1000XM5 has a great mic for voice calls. There is no muffled or static sound in the background. Noise cancelling is also excellent, and these headphones are ideal for public transportation or the office.

Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2

The Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2 is a significant upgrade from its predecessor, delivering high-end performance and features. It features wireless streaming with 24-bit and optimized active noise cancellation, as well as clear voice call quality on any compatible tablet or mobile phone. The 40mm drivers, which are designed specifically and angled in each earcup, offer more complete and focused listening experience. Six strategically placed microphones guarantee exceptional call clarity even in noisy environments. An inline remote and microphone lets you control your calls and music using any compatible device.

Similar to the PX7's original design, these headphones are elegant and refined with accent rings around each earcup and a silver-colored headband. The earcups are cushioned with memory foam and fit comfortably on the cranium but never feel tight. The redesigned shape and form took a long time to perfect, providing a comfortable clamping force that doesn't push too hard even on my own cranium that is rotund.

They are 2 ounces lighter (or 307g) and a bit thinner than the Sony WH1000XM5. They're light enough to carry in your backpack or bag without any discomfort, and they'll stay comfortable in your hand during long listens. A sturdy hinge on the back of the headband enables you to fold them to make it easy to transport them in an enclosed case.

The headphones are powered by Bluetooth 5.2, with aptX Adaptive. This is great for high-resolution audio aswell as a fast video sync. You can also play them wirelessly too, using the included 3.5mm cable that connects to a USB-C port on the right earcup. The status indicator on the earphone is a nice feature. It flashes green to show rapid charging, and solid blue to indicate Bluetooth pairing.

The B&W app provides the same features as the onboard buttons in the hardware such as bass and treble adjustments, action button assignment, wear detection, cycle through ANC modes, and more. The app also displays an album cover and track's name when you play music on your iPhone. However, popular extras like music presets and soundscapes feature aren't available.

Sennheiser HD 800 S

The HD 800 S is a successor to the legendary Sennheiser headphones and was made to meet the highest expectations. Its technical construction has been optimized to provide a detail resolution that encompasses all frequencies, dynamic range, and stereo panorama. It's the most realistic spatial audio you'll hear on headphones with open backs.

The headphone has an impedance of 300 ohms which means it requires a top-quality headphone amplifier to drive it at the right levels, without distortion. It is recommended to utilize a balanced connection, which can increase the output and boost the sound quality.

The headphones are designed to be used by professionals and feature a sturdy metal frame, with a mixture of plastics and leather padding. The design is rather minimalist and doesn't resemble an expensive pair of headphones, but they feel premium in the palm and are built to last. They come with a carry case, an additional audio cable and an adapter from 1/4" to 1-/8" adapter.

With a neutral sound profile the HD 800 S reproduces natural instruments and vocals, even though they are light in bass. The open-back design results in a spacious, out-of-head soundstage. The treble is very good with minor drops and peaks. The treble region is very linear, so you shouldn't have any issues hitting sibilants or the upper bite of a snare drum.

They still have the ability to deliver and dynamism in the event of need, despite the absence of a powerful low-end. They'll still be enjoyable for those who enjoy listening to music with powerful basslines, but they may not sound as enjoyable as some of the other models on this list, such as the HiFiMan Arya.

These Sennheiser headphones have a fantastic midrange. They are straight and have a slight scoop on the upper mids, which shouldn't be noticed by the majority of listeners. They also reproduce fine time gradations in vocals which is a huge benefit.

The HD 800 S is a pair of premium headphones that are perfect for professionals and audiophiles. Their exceptional sound quality and comfortable fit make them an excellent choice. The headphones are expensive but they will last you for a long time and will perform in any environment.

Anker Soundcore Life q20

The Anker Soundcore Q20 is a decent pair of headphones for those who wants to relax or just want an affordable set of headphones that cancel out noise. The headphones come with a simple bag that will protect them when you put them into a bag. Their battery can last for a long time on long-haul flights. Their ANC is capable of blocking out chattering seatmates and engine rumbles when on an airplane, although their audio profile is a bit heavy and warm.

The Life Q20's controls are simple to navigate and well-marked. On the left earcup there are buttons to power up and pair the headphones, as well as to turn off or on active noise cancellation. On the right earcup, you'll find media playback controls. This includes a multi-function control that activates your phone's voice assistant and switches on Anker BassUp (more about that later). You can also utilize the built-in microphone in order to make hands-free calls with your phone.

Anker's Soundcore Life Q20 headphone provides a full and immersive listening experience due to its custom 40 mm dynamic driver that offers certified Hi-Res audio. With a treble that extends up to 40 kHz, these headphones are able to provide exceptional clarity and detail, while their hybrid active noise cancelling technology is designed to block out a wider range of mid- and low-frequency sounds.

Anker Soundcore Q20 doesn't support aptX. This is a pity. This means you will not be able take advantage of the superior codes' lower latency while gaming on your computer.

In headphonesshop of comfort The Life Q20's memory foam ear cups and headbands are comfortable enough to wear for long periods of time without causing any discomfort. The earcups are able to rotate, allowing them to adapt to the specific shape of your head so that you can achieve a perfect fit. You can also enjoy your music with a 3.5mm cable, and a microUSB cable is provided for charging the battery.
