Seismic waves are the vibrations that travel through the Earth in response to various natural or human-induced events, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and explosions. There are two primary types of seismic waves:

1. *Body Waves:*
- P-Waves (Primary or Compressional Waves): These are the fastest seismic waves and can travel through solid rock, liquid, and gas. They cause particles to move in the same direction as the wave is moving, alternately compressing and expanding material.
- S-Waves (Secondary or Shear Waves): These are slower than P-waves and can only travel through solid materials. S-waves cause particles to move perpendicular to the wave's direction, creating a side-to-side shaking motion.

2. *Surface Waves:*
- Love Waves: These waves move in a horizontal, side-to-side motion and are responsible for much of the horizontal ground shaking during an earthquake.
- Rayleigh Waves: These waves have a rolling or elliptical motion, causing both vertical and horizontal ground movement. They are often responsible for the most significant damage during an earthquake.
