started by quaker meetings in the area, targeting PNC bank because they are the #1 promoters, thursday planning meeting at 9pm Christian Association w/ folks to contextualize movement, rally november 3rd for the trustees meeting in the Inn at Penn, [email protected]. gathering at 3:30, meeting at 3:45
b media collective:
we need to create our own media b/c the dp is awfulllllllll. seems artsy, some people like artsy. it could be good but don't want to distract from what we are currently doing, nov 1st to 19th they are doing a northeast tour. perhaps we should set up a separate time to talk about media like a recitation. maybe someone should research into b media collective (Rosie)
media recitation: an additional timeblock outside regular monday meetings to engage further with some topic (Rosie will be the media person until the recitation)

Chris Hicks - at georgetown, there was already a strong union campus, student to student education to build a student wide issue, better for our group to start with a smaller goal and then building from there, who are you working with? just student-workers? campus workers too? student workers are insulated from repercussions, harder to do on this campus - we have very different work-study workers, there could still be potential, you need to feel like there is an injustice happening, student-workers might have good relationships with people who are not students but there is some disagreement - lots of work-study jobs only involve students, what if your work-study was your career? - information at career fairs, etc, changing framework that the same opportunities might not be there for us after we graduate

JwJ hired by SEIU to organize security workers at upenn. won a 50% wage increases and paid sick leave. formed an independent union when SEIU sold workers out to a company. unions are in trouble; they are declining. run the philadelphia security officers union and has opened a new front at penn. how can we be helpful to each other??
organizing security officers at upenn bc they approached them for unionizing. at penn 35 roving security officers. if there is going to be an election, there needs to be heavy student presence and awareness
mechanics of organizing a union: sign a petition w/35% of workers that says they want to join the union; have about 45 days from the day the petition is filed. don't want to have an election when students are gone b/c tensions and abuses are worst at the time of an election. if it's not figured out by january - move to the fall. workers need to know that students support them. need to make the general student body aware of the conditions workers are facing and why they want to unionize.
in the past the rovers were the organizers b/c they have access to all workers on campus, penn raised the wages of rovers ie building a wage structure that inhibited organizing
wage hasn't come up in meetings
are the rovers a distinct organizing unit? not sure, legal team checking out now

in conversation "i really appreciate your job, i know you don't get a lot of support or compensation. i know some people who are working to change that. are you interested?" if not, just tell them that you appreciate them and don't pester them
