The company closed its Formula One operations in 1994, though Colin Chapman's son Clive continues to run the Team Lotus historic motorsport activities as Classic Team Lotus, preserving the Works Lotus F1 archive and running them in the FIA Historic Formula One Championship. The Lotus name returned to racing in 2011 with a semi-works effort fielded by Jetalliance Racing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but the team was not competitive and withdrew from the series for 2012.
In addition to cars, the Lotus brand is also associated with motorcycles, having produced road and offroad bikes since the 1950s. The company's bikes have featured a variety of engines, including the original Honda CR500 that inspired its eponymous model, and it has also been involved in the aerospace industry with the manufacture of spacecraft for NASA and other agencies.
