Meskipun rune membentuk urutan abjad, mereka pada dasarnya ideografik bukan abjad pada prinsipnya.

Setara bahasa Inggris mereka adalah 'f', 'u', 'th', 'a', 'r' dan 'k' - maka tergabung menjadi 'Futhark'.
Bentuk alfabet dikenal sebagai The Futhark Jerman/Penatua.
Runes of Futhark Penatua cenderung mewakili 'energi' atau 'proses'. Mereka bisa menjadi nomina dan gabungan.
