Emfit NZ is a New Zealand registered company that manufactures the EMFIT range of bed sensors. These systems are designed to detect micro-movements of the person lying on a mattress and alert a carer or parent when there is a tonic clonic seizure. The system is made up of a flexible, durable film-like bed sensor that sits under the mattress and a control unit with sophisticated software to detect the micro movements like heart beating of the person.
The EMFIT system is the most advanced in the world and is used internationally to monitor people for epilepsy. It detects the fast, sustained movements that are associated with seizures and will sound an alarm if these continue for longer than a pre-set time period.
EMFIT QS and PSG were compared in 30-second EBE HR using a 4-stage classification (awake, light, deep, and REM). Using paired t-tests or Wilcoxon signed-rank test, the differences between the two devices' sleep outcomes were found to be statistically significant. EMFIT QS was not as sensitive to detecting the 4 stages of sleep as PSG. Epilepsy Alarms EMFIT QS significantly overestimated the times of light sleep and REM, while it underestimated the time of deep sleep.
EMFIT QS had an overestimation bias of 53%, 49% and 56% for awake, deep and REM, respectively. Its discrimination of these 3 stages was also poor.
