8 Tips For Boosting Your Railroad Workers Game
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

Houston's Fifth Ward neighbors have complained for decades that the company hasn't taken the necessary steps to clean up an underground plume contaminated rail yard. Recent tests have revealed that the contamination could be an issue for residents living nearby.

Researchers believe it could be related to elevated cancer rates in the area. Two years after the launch of a state-wide health investigation and a study by researchers, they found that there were higher than expected rates of lymphoblastic childhood and adult pelvis and kidney cancers in the area surrounding the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote, a common chemical, is that is used in the treatment of wood. It is also a cause of cancer in people exposed to it.

It is a thick oily substance, ranging from amber to black in color. It has a smoky scent and a burnt taste. It is a coal tar distillation product and has been used for more than 150 years as an ingredient in wood preservative.

It is used in the United States to treat railroad ties, as well as other types of woods, such as fence posts, utility poles, and marine pilings. It can also be used to protect log homes and other structures from rot and insect infestation.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Creosote, according to the EPA, is potentially dangerous chemical. Exposure to it for short periods can cause eye and skin irritation chemical burns stomach discomfort, burning of the mouth or throat and liver or kidney issues.

Long-term exposure to the sun can cause skin and scrotum cancer. This is a significant concern for workers who are in direct contact with it during wood treatment or other manufacturing processes.

It is thought to be a probable human carcinogen, as per the EPA. It has been linked to a variety of different types of cancer including esophageal and lung cancer.

Residents of Houston's Fifth Ward neighborhood have been exposed to creosote for decades, thanks to a former rail yard near their homes. They claim that the chemical has affected their homes as well as their soil, and it continues to spread underground.

Harris County and Houston have joined the effort against Union Pacific in federal court. Cancer Lawsuit Settlements want the company to test for contamination on a regular basis and adopt preventative measures to stop the spread.

In October 2017 a group of Fifth Ward neighbors filed a lawsuit against Union Pacific. They claim that creosote contaminated their soil and caused significant health problems as a result of the former rail yard.

They are seeking compensation from the railroad in order to cover the cost of cleanup as well as other related costs. They claim that they have been affected by environmental racism discrimination, sexism, and other forms of pollution that affected their families as well as them.

Dioxin

Dioxins are a class of chemicals that do not degrade quickly in the environment, and they can remain in the soil, air, or sediment for a long duration. They can be found in various sources, including natural disasters, industrial accidents cigarette smoke and incineration of hazardous waste.

Although Cancer Lawsuit Settlements of dioxin on health at low levels are not identified, there is evidence that they can trigger serious diseases like cancer. Dioxin levels that are higher have been linked to increased risk of organ cancers, heart disease, immune problems, and endocrine disorders, including hormonal imbalances. They can also cause hormonal problems, suppressed immunity and diabetes, menstrual issues and weight loss.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency the most popular way people are exposed to dioxin is through drinking water or food. They are not volatile and water-soluble, therefore they are more easily to be absorbed by the body through the intake of dairy products, meat, fish, and other seafood.

It is crucial to keep in mind, however, that exposure to chemicals can affect your health based on a variety of factors , including how much you drink, eat and the frequency with which you breathe. You should also consider your gender, age, nutrition, and family traits to determine whether you will be exposed to dioxins.

In addition, the type of contaminant is an important factor. The EPA states that certain toxic substances are more likely to have a negative impact on health than others. Polychlorinated Biphenyls, or PCBs, are more likely than creosote negatively impact your health.

For example, PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys, and liver. They can also affect the immune system and cause problems with the growth of healthy teeth, bones and bones.

Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden neighbors have complained for years about a cluster of cancer deaths that are that are linked to the Union Pacific rail yard. The yard is right next to their homes. The city's health department announced Friday that it had discovered cancer-causing substances in surface samples of the rail yard. The release said that the findings were "not encouraging." FOX 26's Mayor Sylvester Turner stated that he plans on suing Union Pacific over the matter and that a plan proposed by Texas environmental regulators won't be sufficient.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are harmful chemicals that have been used in industrial and household products for more than 60 years. After being proven to cause cancer and inhibit the immune system the immune system, these chemicals were banned in 1979.

When released into the environment, PCBs contaminate air, soil, and water throughout the world. They are strong binders for organic matter and can be transported easily and accumulated in the environment.

PCBs are a major issue for protecting the environment as well as public health. They are regarded as a possible human carcinogen by EPA and have been proven to cause cancer in laboratory animals.

In addition certain studies have linked PCBs to birth defects in children. This is particularly true for children exposed to these chemicals in the womb.

PCBs are most often ingested through food items. Because they are the highest in PCBs fish is the primary source of exposure. However, PCBs can also found in beef, dairy products and other agricultural products.

Showering and drinking PCB-contaminated water is another method of exposure. This could be due to leaks or spills that could be caused by electrical or other equipment.

In the same way, people can be exposed to PCBs through breathing in air or through skin. These chemicals can trigger a condition called Chloracne. This is a tiny, pale, yellow-colored skin lesions that can last for weeks to years.

However the effects of PCBs on human health are not yet completely comprehended. Some researchers have suggested they could cause liver or the biliary tract cancers among humans, however more studies are needed to understand the extent to which this impacts us.

EPA has also been examining whether these chemicals cause birth defects in newborns, including lower birth weight. Low birth weight is associated with insulin resistance or Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease later in the course of. In two studies, children who were born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower body weight at birth, and/or later in childhood.

Lead

Lead is a poisonous metal and is found in many products, including pipes, paints and food cans. The body absorbs it through two main routes: oral and respiratory.

It is a strong antioxidant and is prone to react with other chemicals found in the environment. This could cause it to build up within the body. This can cause serious health issues like cancer and other diseases.

Houston residents who reside near the Union Pac Railroad's creosote-based plant that is its legacy are at a high risk of cancer. The city has requested the federal government to direct the railroad to clean up the site that is contaminated.

Union Pacific Railroad has a past history of been a source of contamination for its Fifth Ward rail yard and Kashmere Garden neighborhood with chemicals that can cause cancer. The company has tried to clean up the contamination, but the plan submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality isn't enough residents say.

One of the most significant problems that stemmed due to the contamination is the groundwater plume beneath homes in the region. A recent study by health officials has revealed that soil samples taken from the rail yard have a higher concentration of creosote than is recommended for drinking water.

Another major concern is that creosote is slowly disappearing into the air. As it escapes, it causes residents to breathe dangerous levels of vapors, which are harmful for children as well as adults.

It is possible that the vapors could cause cancer for those who breathe them. A door-to-door health survey is being conducted in the area to understand the effects of the vapors on the lives of the residents.

This is a major issue for the Fifth Ward communities and Kashmere Gardens. This is a terribly sad situation that needs to be dealt with immediately.

Railroad Workers Cancer Lawsuit conducted by the Department of State Health Services found that children in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities contracted a type leukemia that was five times greater rate than what was expected. The study also found that adult cancers were more common in these neighborhoods than in other areas of Texas.
