A bipolar disorder is a mental illness that causes mood shifts. They can be triggered by events in the person's life or by a chemical change in their brain. The condition has a high success rate for treatment, but it can be difficult to find the right medication or to make sure you're taking it correctly.
The symptoms of bipolar disorder vary from person to person, and the length and severity of each episode varies as well. For example, a manic episode may last from two to six weeks and include feelings of elation or irritability, increased energy, decreased need for sleep, inflated self-esteem and an increase in goal-oriented behavior.
These symptoms can also include a lack of interest in regular activities, increased impulsiveness or suicidal thoughts. Bipolar merch with a bipolar disorder can also experience periods of depression, which are more intense than normal mood swings and can be debilitating.
If you think you might have bipolar disorder, talk to your GP or a mental health professional. They will be able to give you a diagnosis and recommend treatment. They can also refer you to a specialist if needed.
There are many types of bipolar disorders, including type 1 and 2 and mixed (formerly known as manic-depressive). You can have one or more episodes each year.
Most people with bipolar disorder will have at least one episode each year, although some experience more than three. The most extreme cases may result in hospitalization or symptoms of psychosis, which includes hallucinations or delusions.
Your doctor can diagnose you with bipolar disorder by examining your symptoms, and by testing your blood for lithium or other substances that cause mania. Your doctor will also want to know your family history of mental illness, and whether you are taking other medications that can affect your mood.
In addition to medication, your therapist can help you learn how to manage the symptoms of bipolar disorder and to get through episodes. They can help you set goals and develop coping skills.
You can also attend a support group for bipolar patients. These groups can be extremely helpful and often provide a safe place for you to vent and ask questions without judgment or pressure from other people in the group.
For many people with mental illnesses, it's hard to feel like they are accepted or understood by others. That can be especially difficult for people with bipolar disorder, who have to live with the stigma that surrounds this illness.
Having someone understand and empathize with your feelings is an important step to recovery from bipolar disorder. But it can be hard to find someone you trust and can be a challenge to talk to, says Joe Gorczyca, board member of re:MIND, an organization that offers support groups in Houston for those with depression or bipolar disorder.
The Bipolar Love T-shirt line, based on the song by Adio Marchant and Tee Co, is part of a campaign to raise awareness about mental health and promote positive attitudes towards those with bipolar disorder.
