Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

For decades, neighbors in Houston's Fifth Ward have argued the company hasn't done enough to remove creosote-laden creosote plume that was at its contaminated rail yard. Recent tests have revealed that the contamination could be in the vicinity of residents.

Researchers believe it's due to the high number of cancers that are found in the area. Two years into a state health investigation they discovered higher than expected levels of childhood lymphoblastic leukemia and adult kidney and renal pelvis cancers in the neighborhoods around the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote is a popular chemical used in the treatment of wood, is also a common one. It is also a dangerous substance that can cause cancer when exposed to it.

It is a heavy oily substance which is amber or black in color and has a smoky odor and burnt taste. It is a distillation of coal product that has been used for more than 150 years to preserve wood.

It is employed in the United States to treat railroad tiesand other types of woods like fence posts, utility poles, as well as pilings for marine structures. It can also be used to safeguard log homes and other structures from rot and insect infestation.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says creosote is an extremely hazardous chemical. The exposure to creosote over short periods can cause skin and eye irritation and chemical burns stomach discomfort, burning of the mouth or throat, kidney or liver problems, and even permanent damage.

Long-term exposure can cause skin and scrotum cancer. This is a major concern for workers who have direct contact with it during wood treatment or in other manufacturing processes.

According to the EPA the EPA, it is a known human cancer-causing agent. It has been linked with many types of cancer which include esophageal, as well lung cancer.

Residents of Houston's Fifth Ward neighborhood have been exposed to creosote for decades, thanks to the former rail yard that was located near their homes. They claim that the chemical has affected their homes, soil and is spreading underground.

The cities of Houston and Harris County have joined the effort to sue Union Pacific in federal court. Railroad Workers Cancer Lawsuit are demanding that the company test for contamination on a regular basis and adopt preventative measures to stop the spread.

A group of Fifth Ward neighbors filed a lawsuit against Union Pacific in October of 2017. They claim that creosote had contaminated their soil and caused major health issues from the former rail yard.

They are seeking compensation for their illnesses and suffering, as well as damages from railroads for the cost of cleanup and other related costs. They claim to have suffered the effects of environmental racism discrimination, sexism, and other forms of pollution that affected them and their families.

Dioxin

Dioxins are a class of chemicals which do not break down quickly in the environment, and they can remain in the soil, air, water or sediment for an extended period of. They can be found in many places in natural disasters, industrial accidents, cigarettes and incineration, as well as hazardous waste.

The effects of dioxin on health aren't clear at low levels, but there is evidence that they may cause cancer as well as other serious diseases. Higher levels of dioxin have been linked to an increased risk for organ cancers, heart disease immune disorders, and endocrine issues such as hormonal imbalances. They can also cause reproductive problems, a weakened immune system, menstrual issues and diabetes hair growth, weight loss and facial cysts called chloracne.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) the most frequent way that people are exposed to the toxins is through food and water. They aren't volatile or water-soluble, so they are more likely to be absorbed into the body through the consumption of meat, dairy products, fish and other seafood.

It is important to remember that exposure to dioxins could affect your health depending on many factors like how much you consume, drink, and the frequency with which you breathe. It is also important to take into consideration your age, gender and nutrition status, as well as diet and family traits, as well as other health factors that could determine whether you'll be affected by dioxins or not.

The type of contaminant is crucial. According to the EPA, some toxins are more dangerous than others to the health of humans. Polychlorinated biphenyls, also known as PCBs are more likely than creosote have a negative effect on your health.

PCBs can cause damage to the eyes and kidneys, liver, and kidneys. They can also damage the immune system and cause issues in the development of healthy teeth, bones, and bones.

For a long time, residents of Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens have been complaining about a series of cancer-related deaths that has been tied to the Union Pacific rail yard, which is located near their communities. The city's health department said on Friday that it had found cancer-causing substances in surface samples of the rail yard. The release noted that the results weren't encouraging. FOX 26's Mayor Sylvester Turner stated that he intends to sue Union Pacific over the matter and that a plan proposed by Texas environmental regulators will not be sufficient.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)

PCBs, also known as polychlorinated biphenyls, are harmful chemicals that have been used for more than 60 years in industrial and consumer products. They were banned in 1979 following being proven to cause cancer, weaken the immune system, and hinder learning.

PCBs can contaminate soil, water, and air in many parts of the world after they are released into the environment. They are strong binders for organic matter, and are transported easily and accumulated in the environment.

As a result, PCBs are a major issue for the protection of health and safety of people and the environment. The EPA is adamant that they are a human carcinogen and has shown that they can cause cancer in lab animals.

Some studies also link PCBs to birth defects in children. This is particularly the case for children exposed these chemicals during the womb.

The primary route of exposure to PCBs is through food. Because they are the highest in PCBs fish is the primary source of exposure. However, PCBs can also found in dairy products, beef and other agricultural products.

Another way to be exposed to PCBs is by drinking or showering with water that is polluted with PCBs. This could be due to leaks or spills that could occur in electrical and other equipment.

Similar to this, people may be exposed to PCBs through breathing air or through their skin. These chemicals can cause an illness known as chloracne which is a small, pale yellow skin lesions that can last from weeks to years.

The effects of PCBs on human health are not fully recognized. Some researchers have suggested that they could cause liver and biliary tract cancer in humans, however more research is needed to find out the extent to which this impacts us.

The EPA is also investigating whether these chemicals can cause birth defects in newborns. Low birth weight has been associated with insulin resistance, or Type II diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases later in the course of. In two studies, children born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower body weight at birth and/or later in childhood.

Lead

Lead is a toxic metal and can be found in a variety of products, including paints, pipes and food cans. It can be absorbed by the body through two main routes: respiratory and oral.

It is an extremely chemical that can oxidize and react with other chemicals in your environment. This could cause it to build up within the body. This can cause serious health issues like cancer, among other illnesses.

Houston residents who reside near the Union Pac Railroad's legacy creosote plant have a high incidence of cancer. The city has requested the federal government's help in the cleanup of the railroad's contamination site.

Union Pacific Railroad has a long history of having contaminated its Fifth Ward rail yard and Kashmere Garden neighborhood with chemicals that can cause cancer. Residents say that the company has been trying to eliminate the contamination, but the plan submitted to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was not sufficient.

One of the major problems that stemmed from the contamination is the groundwater plume under the homes in the region. A recent study by health officials has shown that soil samples taken from the rail yard have a higher concentration of creosote than the recommended amount for drinking water.

Another major concern is that the creosote is slowly dispersing into the air. It causes residents to breathe toxic levels of vapors, which could cause death for children and adults.

It is possible that the vapors could cause cancer for those who breathe them. To find out more about the impact of the vapors' effects on the lives of residents there is a door-to door survey being done in the neighborhood.

This is a major issue for the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities. This is a tragic situation and it should be dealt with immediately.

A recent study by the Department of State Health Services found that children living in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden neighborhoods contracted a type of leukemia at five times higher rate than the average. The study also found that adult cancers were more common in these neighborhoods than elsewhere in Texas.
