A tonic seizure is a type of convulsion. It is characterized by sudden stiffening of muscles on both sides of the body. The person suffering the seizure may feel confused or sleepy for several minutes. They may also have difficulty remembering what happened.
Tonic seizures are usually not serious and do not affect the long-term outlook of a patient. However, people with epilepsy are at higher risk for emotional health issues.

Usually, tonic and clonic seizures last less than five minutes, but can be longer. A tonic or clonic seizure that occurs more than three times in a row is called status epilepticus.
