A Story Behind the Rose Bear
The history of the rose bear starts in 1902, when Brooklyn candy store owners Morris and Rose Michtom were having a disagreement over the location of a Mississippi-Louisiana border dispute. The couple was afraid that a stuffed animal displayed in the shop window would be a nuisance to Theodore Roosevelt. So they made a replica and christened the animal "Teddy's Bear."
They made their first teddy bears the night before and displayed them in their candy shop. They were pleasantly surprised that there were 12 people who came to their candy shop the next day to buy the bears.
They began selling growing in popularity. Morris and Rose were so overwhelmed by the demand for toys that they decided to devote their lives to developing them. Their teddy bears became their biggest success.
In the final analysis, they were successful enough that they founded Ideal Toy Company in the early twentieth century and sold millions of teddies worldwide. In spite of this, they did not forget their Jewish roots, supporting charities such as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society and the Jewish National Fund.
The Michtoms were famous for their creativity as well as their dedication. They also continued to support their Jewish faith by volunteering in synagogues and religious schools and by supporting diverse cultural events across the country.
