We do not plan to add any new mechanics or gameplay features to 1.13. Instead we will continue to improve the game engine.
This first snapshot will introduce two major modifications to our codebase: data packs and LWJGL.
Data Packs
Usage & Installation
A data pack could be or be
Zip file
or
Directory
inside /datapacks/. Both data packs are valid, as an example.
/datapacks/CoolPack2000.zip /datapacks/SuperPack3000/
If you get data packs from a relative or the internet, we usually think it will be the form of a zip file. Place it in the datapacks/ folder and it will be installed.
If you change, install, or remove a data pack whilst the game is running then the /reload command will take effect the changes.
FILE STRUCTURE
pack.mcmeta (Required). The file contains a description of the pack. This contains a description about the pack. data/ This is the reason it is a data pack, containing all data files.Similar to resource packs, everything requires a namespace.- functions/ - contains all commands. functions.mcfunction - A command function whose name is :

Pack Hierarchy
Just like resource packs data packs have a load order. However, there isn't currently a way to see or change this. Sorry! We're working on it.
Note: Recipes?
? Szv7 We aren't yet done supporting the concept of data packs for recipes. We don't consider custom data packs for recipes, and we don't synchronize any custom recipes from the server to clients.

Namespaces
Although this isn't an entirely new idea, it's important to remember what a "namespace" is. Everything in the game are part of an associated namespace, which means that the moment we add something and a mod (or map, or whatever) adds something, they're both distinct things. If you're asked to name something, such as the loot table, you're expected to also specify the namespace it comes from. If you don't provide the namespace it defaults to minecraft. This means that something and minecraft:something are the same thing.
Please always use your own namespace for any new information you create, and only use other namespaces if you're overriding something else. Don't try to add new things in minecraft in general.
A namespace should contain the following symbols:

You can call anything (recipes or advancements, etc) but these are the only officially recognized symbols.

The preferred naming convention is lower_case_with_underscores.
LWJGL 3
We have also been updated to use the most current version of LW
JGL
. This has fixed a number of long-standing bugs on Mac OS and Linux, and should result in a much more stable playing experience. Fullscreen mode defaults to borderless windowsed, which means that it's very simple to switch between fullscreen and borderless modes. We've identified the following issues you might be confronted with:
- Fullscreen mode on Mac OS X has a high risk of hard-crashing and we have disabled it until we find an alternative. - There may be some instances in the game in which key inputs are double-channeled, like pressing a hotbar key while hovering over an object in the creative inventory search tab. - The game icon on Mac OS X is no longer a grassblock. I am working on it!
Blocks for structuring
When you use "save" in a structure block, it now saves it in the following location: generated//structures/

When you use "load" in a structure block, we attempt to load the generated folder before trying data packs. This is so that saving and loading are constant.
However - please never distribute the "generated" folder as-is if you're making custom maps. It is best to move it all into an data package. Thank you!
Backwards compatibility - going back in time!
It's always a problem, but we think that we should be able to say it this time around.
We do not support going back to old versions of minecraft within the same folder in which you run a new version of Minecraft
. If you attempt to run this snapshot, and then return to an earlier version in the same directory, you will
lose all your keybindings
.
It is always recommended to run snapshots (and any other version than "the most recent release") in their own folders. Incidentally, this is also the reason why your tutorial toasts keep popping up ;)
A word of warning
1.13 will have a
Lot
of experimental snapshots that may be a mess and smell strange. This could be one of the snapshots. This is what happens when everything changes!
Install the snapshot
Please report any and all bugs you discover in Minecraft to bugs.mojang.com. We won't be able to fix a problem when no one reports it!
Open your launcher and select the "launch options tab" to get snapshots. Select the box that says "Enable snapshots" and save. You can switch between the normal and snapshot versions by clicking the "Play" button. Backup your entire world before you play the game in another folder (in the "launch options") page.
Snapshots can cause harm to your environment. Backup them and/or save them in separate folders.
