Google is planning to bring Android games to Windows PCs in the next year. Google will launch the Google Play Games app in 2022. This app will allow games from Google Play to run on Windows tablets, laptops, and PCs.

"Starting in 2022, gamers will be able to experience their most loved Google Play games on a variety of devices: seamlessly switching between a phone tablet, Chromebook, and soon, Windows PCs," says Greg Hartrell, Google's product director of games on Android and Google Play in an announcement to The Verge. "This Google-built product will bring the most popular Google Play Games to more laptops and desktops We are excited that we can expand our platform for Android gamers to experience their favorite Android apps even more."

Google spokesperson Alex Garcia-Kummert reveals to The Verge that the company created the application on its own which means Google hasn't partnered with Microsoft, BlueStacks, or other players here. The app will allow users to play games on a computer with a desktop, regardless of whether they are playing on a tablet, smartphone or Chromebook.

Google is currently showing a teaser of the app during The Game Awards tonight. It is expected to be released next year. It's unclear what technology Google uses to emulate Android apps on Windows however, games will be played locally rather than streaming from the cloud.

"This will be an original Windows app that is distributed by Google and will work with Windows 10 and up," Hartrell explains Hartrell. "It won't involve game streaming." Google's app will not rely on any special integrations that are required with Windows 11. The company will distribute the app.

Google's announcement comes a few months after Microsoft began testing Android apps on Windows 11 computers. Microsoft has created an underpinning Windows Subsystem to Android that can run Android apps from a variety of sources. The software giant has partnered with Amazon to let Windows users install natively games and apps from the Amazon Appstore but the native Google Play support won't be made available through Microsoft's feature.

Since Microsoft is the only company that has officially partnered with Amazon for this feature, it has resulted in less Android apps and games for Windows 11 users to easily install than they would be. USAGAMESINTERACTIVE Google, BlueStacks and other companies have the opportunity to fill this gap.

BlueStacks along with Google and Microsoft are working together to bring Android apps and games to Windows. However, BlueStacks is now bringing Android games directly to web browsers. BlueStacks X allows you to play Android games from your browser. BlueStacks was founded in 2016 and has been focused on Android gaming on Windows.

Details on Google's plans for Android apps running on Windows first were revealed in a document from the Epic v. Apple trial earlier this year. Dated October 2020, the 70-page document outlined an ambitious plan to launch Android games running on Macs and Windows PCs. The document revealed Google will first bring "emulated native, streamed and native games" to Windows, and at least part of the effort is beginning in 2022.
