On November 7 2018 IER entered into a settlement with MJFT Hotels of Flushing LLC, which manages the Hyatt Place Flushing/Laguardia Airport hotel. The settlement was to settle a complaint alleging that it discriminated against a work-authorized immigrant in its hiring process. The settlement stipulates that MJFT to pay an administrative penalty of a civil nature, educate employees in the relevant areas about the requirements of 8 U.S.C. Section 1324b. The company must submit three-year departmental monitoring and reports, and amend its policy exclusion of work-authorized immigrants applicants.

Product Liability Settlements

Union Pacific, a major railroad that has 32,000 route mile. It transports products such as food, chemicals and metals, intermodal and automobiles. The company earned $16.1 billion in profits in 2011.

Its safety policies state that anyone with more than a slight risk of "sudden incapacitation" is not allowed to be employed by the railroad. Former employees claim that the company ignores doctors' advice and instead makes its own decisions, even though doctors have advised them to follow the advice.

Union Pacific denied a custodian job to an employee suffering from a brain tumour, according to a lawsuit filed in the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. EEOC attorney Jim Kaster told CNBC that the agency is looking into Union Pacific's conduct which is in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The plaintiff in this case, Eric Doi, worked in a gang called a zone that moved on a regular basis to and from various states to do work for the railroad. He was injured when he was involved in the rollover accident with a different Union Pacific truck driver.

Doi claimed that Union Pacific was negligent in several ways, including not properly to supervise and train its employees. Doi also claimed that the railroad did not provide proper safety procedures and also failed to follow industry standards. He was awarded $557 million by the jury.

In addition to the $557 million settlement, a portion of the compensation will be used for the future medical treatment of the victim. The court will also make an order that requires the railroad to take actions to ensure that members of the zone gang are properly trained and supplied with the proper safety equipment and procedures to operate their vehicles.

Hallman who served as Torres's legal counsel was seeking the court's acceptance of the settlement in accordance with Code of Civil Procedure fn. 1 section 877.6, which states that courts must accept settlements made in good faith. The trial court decided that the settlements made by both parties were done in good faith, and therefore did not amount to an illegal or fraudulent act.

Medical Malpractice Settlements

Another instance involved a patient who suffered kidney damage after her diagnosis was incorrectly made by doctors. The doctor did not properly request an MRI or perform blood tests. The patient was then operated on without knowing what was wrong and caused permanent kidney damage.

Another instance was a man who sustained serious injuries to his knee when it was injured in an accident at work. He was able to recover a portion of his wages but the damage to his body and his career were substantial. Additionally, he had undergo surgery to repair his knee.
