Watch THE MOUTH AREA! A Warning About Electronic Collars To Those In YOUR DOG Industry
If a manufacturer or distributor wishes to market electronic dog collars, or perhaps a dog trainer really wants to help a dog and the dog's owner with training, why on the planet would they perpetuate the hysteria that comes from describing a remote training collar as a "shock" collar?

A remote training collar is an extremely similar technology to a muscle stimulator that might be prescribed to a (human) patient undergoing physical therapy. The technology has many medical and dental uses. Additionally it is used in the abdomen belts sold to help people achieve a "6-pack" of abs.

Notice, please, that now here may be the word "shock" used when describing this type of device to be used on an individual. The dentist does not come striding in announcing that the probe she'll use on your tooth will probably "shock" you. Should they used that word, most people would be tearing out of the office as fast as they could go.

People are terrified to be shocked. People love their dogs. No one who loves their dog is going to be OK with shocking their dog.

You can find few word combinations in the English language that inspire more fear, loathing and moral superiority than the combination of what "shock," and "collar." One well known television celebrity dog trainer includes a You Tube video during which she acts out her outrage and disgust over using a "shock" collar. The video is almost cartoon-like in its scripted hatred of "evil" dog trainers who would shock a poor dog.

Of course, all of us who've researched the technology and be skilled at training dogs with it recognize that this television celebrity is creating a false analogy between remote training collars and the sort of electricity we've in the walls of the house. We must realize how pervasive this false analogy is. Any dog trainer or manufacturer of remote training collars should watch this video often. Lurking behind the calm and seemingly reasonable faces of a lot of the dog owning public is this exact misunderstanding, disgust and fear.

For most people, hearing the word "shock" in conjunction with Fluffy's training is really a door slammed shut. The emotion linked to the words "shock-collar" is indeed horrifying that any further discussion goes unheard by the dog's owner.

This mix of words is so powerful that lots of townships, principalities and even entire countries have banned the application of remote training collars. (In March of 2010, the principality of Whales banned the utilization of all remote training collars and pet containment systems.) Government officials think it is easy and convenient to climb aboard the train of community outrage on the existence of "shock" collars. The description of remote training collars as "shock" collars will do to categorically deny the freedom to utilize them--no further investigation needed.

"Shock" is really a word connected with lightening appearing out of the sky, electricity appearing out of a wall outlet, or current from a car battery. This is simply not electronic stimulation. Electronic stimulation has such low amperage that no harm can come from the static-like stimulation. Our celebrity dog trainer falsely assumes that voltage has been sent by the collar although dog's body. Nothing could possibly be further from the truth. The soft tap-tapping used in combination with the remote training collar is localized. No voltage is sent through the body. I have used the remote receiver collar on myself a large number of times at the best level open to demonstrate that even at the best levels, the collars simply stimulate muscles and do zero damage.

The electronic stimulation used in modern remote training collars feels similar to what goes on to us when we take clothing out of a dryer. Often we feel little flicks of static. The static will not distress, but we do notice it. On higher levels, the electronic stimulation will in actuality stimulate muscles, exactly like when we use it on our abs or for physical therapy. (Very seldom should a remote receiver collar used on an even high enough to stimulate muscles.)

Training with a remote collar requires competence and confidence. Used in combination with skill and positive reinforcement, a dog can be trained rapidly to incredibly high levels of training. An adequately trained dog has the capacity to have considerably more freedom because the handler can communicate and issue commands even at a distance. A reliable dog is really a trusted partner. The well trained dog will be able to accompany her owner much more often & most dogs are very wanting to be by their owner's side. Having the ability to trust a dog never to go out in a street and obtain hit by a car, or knowing that a dog will come immediately when called gives an owner great satisfaction.

For the sake of improving the lives of dogs and their owners, this writer and dog trainer pleads with others in our industry to consider removing the word "shock" from your vocabulary. Words are powerful. Some words tend to be more powerful than others. Consider that utilizing the word, "shock" fosters a poor reaction that is both understandable and incredibly unfortunate for dogs and their owners. Please watch your language and your mouth!
