5 Railroad Workers Projects For Every Budget
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

Houston's Fifth Ward neighbors have complained for decades that the company hasn’t taken the necessary steps to clean up an underground plume that is contaminated rail yard. The latest tests have demonstrated that contamination could still be impacting residents living near.

Researchers say it may be related to elevated cancer rates in the area. Two years after the launch of an investigation into health issues across the state the researchers discovered that there were higher than anticipated rates of childhood lymphoblastic and adult pelvis and kidney cancers in the region around the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote is a popular chemical used for the treatment of wood is also a popular one. It can also cause cancer in those who are exposed to it.

It is a heavy oily substance, amber to black in color. It has a smoky smell and a bitter taste. Railroad Injury Settlement Amounts is a distillation of coal product and has been used for more than 150 years as an ingredient in wood preservative.

In the United States, it is used to treat railroad ties as well as other types of wood including fence posts, utility poles, and marine pilings. It is also employed to protect log homes and other structures from rot and infestation.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Creosote, according to the EPA, is a chemical that could be dangerous. When exposed to creosote, even for short periods can result in skin and eye irritation as well as chemical burns stomach pains, burning of the mouth or throat and liver or kidney problems, and even permanent damage.

Long-term exposure to the sun can cause skin and scrotum cancer. This is a serious concern for those who come in direct contact with it during wood treatment or other manufacturing processes.

It is believed to be a human carcinogen according to the EPA. It has been linked with many types of cancer which include esophageal, as well lung cancer.

Houston's Fifth Ward residents have been exposed for a long time to creosote thanks to a former railroad yard near their homes. They claim that the chemical has affected their homes as well as their soil, and it continues to spread throughout the underground.

Harris County and Houston have joined the effort against Union Pacific in federal court. They demand that the company test for contamination on a regular basis and adopt preventative measures to stop the spread.

In October 2017 a group of Fifth Ward neighbors sued Union Pacific. They claim that creosote has contaminated their soil, causing significant health problems as a result of the former rail yard.

They are seeking compensation from the railroad to cover the costs of cleaning up and other related costs. They claim to have suffered the effects of environmental racism, discrimination, and other kinds of pollution that have affected them and their families.

Dioxin

Dioxins are chemicals that don't break down quickly in the environment and can remain in the air, water, or sediment for a lengthy period of. They can be found in many sources, such as natural disasters, industrial accidents, smoking cigarettes, and incineration of hazardous waste.

The health effects of dioxin are not clear at low levels, however there is evidence that suggests they can trigger cancer and other serious diseases. People exposed to higher levels are believed to be at a higher risk of heart disease, organ cancers, immune system problems and endocrine changes like hormonal imbalances. They can also lead to reproductive problems, a depressed immune system, diabetes and menstrual issues and hair growth, weight loss and facial cysts called chloracne.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the most frequent way that people are exposed to the toxins is through water and food. They are not water-soluble or volatile, so they are more likely to be taken into the body via the consumption of meat, dairy products or fish and other seafood.

It is vital to remember that exposure to dioxins can have a detrimental effect on your health depending on many factors like how much you consume, drink, and the frequency with which you breathe. It is also important to consider your gender and age, nutritional status, and family traits to determine whether you will be exposed to dioxins.

Additionally, the type of contaminant is also an important aspect. According to the EPA, some toxins are more dangerous than others for the health of humans. Polychlorinated Biphenyls, or PCBs are more likely than creosote to cause harm to your health.

For example, PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys and liver. They can also harm the immune system of a person, and interfere with the development of healthy bones and teeth.

For years, residents in Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens have complained about a rash of cancer deaths that have been linked to the Union Pacific rail yard, which is located near their neighborhoods. The city's health department said on Friday that it found cancer-causing substances in surface samples of the rail yard. The release said that the results were "not encouraging." FOX 26's Mayor Sylvester Turner stated that he intends to sue Union Pacific over the matter and that a plan proposed by Texas environmental regulators won't suffice.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)

PCBs, also known as polychlorinated biphenyls, are toxic chemicals that have been used for more than 60 years in both consumer and industrial products. After being found to cause cancer and to suppress the immune system, these chemicals were banned in 1979.

After being released into the atmosphere, PCBs contaminate air, water, and soil throughout the world. They are powerful binders of organic matter, and are transported easily and accumulated in the environment.

PCBs are a major concern for protecting the environment as well as public health. They are regarded as a possible human carcinogen by EPA and have been shown to cause cancer in lab animals.

Some studies also show a link between PCBs to birth defects in children. This is especially true for children who have been exposed to these chemicals in the womb.

The primary route of exposure to PCBs is through food items. Fish are the primary source of exposure, as they are the largest source of PCBs. However, PCBs can also found in dairy products, beef, and other agricultural products.

Another way to be exposed PCBs is through drinking and showering with water that has been affected by PCBs. Cancer Lawsuits can be caused by leaks or spills that could occur in electrical and other equipment.

People can also be exposed to PCBs through breathing in air or by skin contact. Cancer Lawsuit can trigger the condition known as chloracne which is a mild, small yellow skin lesions that can last from weeks to years.

The effects of PCBs upon the health of humans aren't completely comprehended. Some researchers have suggested that they could cause liver or the biliary tract cancers among humans, but more studies are needed to determine how this impacts us.

The EPA is also investigating whether these chemicals may cause birth defects in newborns. The low birth weight of newborns has been associated with Type II diabetes, insulin resistance and high blood pressure and later-life cardiovascular disease. In two studies, children who were born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower body weight at birth and/or later in childhood.

Lead

Lead is a toxic metal that is present in a variety of products including paints, pipes, and food cans. The body can absorb it through two main routes: oral and respiratory.

It is a potent oxidizing chemical and can react with other chemicals in your environment. This can lead to it accumulating in the body , and could cause serious health issues like cancer and other ailments.

In Houston, people who live near a creosote treatment plant run by Union Pacific Railroad have a high risk of developing cancer. The city has requested the federal government to instruct the railroad to clean the site that is contaminated.

The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of contamination of its rail yard in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with chemicals that are carcinogenic to humans, including creosote. The company has tried to get rid of the contamination, but a plan submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is not enough residents believe.

One of the most significant problems that stemmed from the contamination is the groundwater plume beneath homes in the region. A recent study by health officials has revealed that soil samples from the rail yard contain an increased amount of creosote than that recommended for drinking water.

Another concern is that the creosote vapor is slowly escaping into the air. As it is, it is causing residents to breathe dangerous levels of vapors that can be harmful to children as well as adults.

It is also possible that the particles are causing cancers among those who breathe the vapors. To find out more about the effect of the vapors on the lives of residents there is a door-to door survey being done in the neighborhood.

This is a major issue for the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities. It's a pity and it should be taken care of immediately.

A Department of State Health Services study found that leukemia incidences were five times higher among children who lived in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens areas than was expected. The study also found that adult cancers were more common in these areas than in other areas of Texas.
