Raleigh has been credited with bringing potatoes and tobacco back to Britain. He also helped to make smoking popular at court . In 1587, Raleigh explored North America from North Carolina to present-day Florida and named the region Virginia in honor of Elizabeth, the “Virgin Queen”
when and how did he die?
Sir Walter Raleigh died on October 29, 1618. He was executed by beheading in London, England. After Elizabeth I died in 1603, Raleigh was again imprisoned in the Tower of London, this time for being involved in the Main Plot against King James I. In 1616, he was released to lead a second expedition in search of El Dorado. During the expedition, men led by his top commander ransacked a Spanish outpost, in violation of both the terms of his pardon and the 1604 peace treaty with Spain. On his return to England, the death sentence was reinstated .
